The autumn leaves fell onto Val's lap as she's sitting down. She's leaning against the wall of the school with her headphones resting on her ears. The sweet sounds of Donna Summer singing "Sweet Romance" has the girl humming along as she finishes off the rest of her joint. A used and abused notebook with its jagged edges lies on her lap as she's sketching one of her favorite moments from memory.

This is her favorite time of the day. Every morning she would come an hour and half early before school started. It's nice like this. She didn't get bothered by anyone, which is why Valerie wasn't too shocked that she didn't get the "new kid" attention.

She had set rules for herself and followed every single rule that she placed. She would smile when needed, answer questions when called on, and kept out of the way for all the so-called "popular kids". Val learned quickly the best way to stay unnoticed was to walk near the lockers, headphones on full blast, and always carried her skateboard on the opposite side of the crowd. Val didn't like attention, and she prefers to be in the background anyways. It was better that way. It gave her the pleasure of people watching without anyone calling her nosey or being a freak for staring.

People watching gave her all the dirty gossip too. She wouldn't know about the argument Carol Perkins had with her boyfriend Tommy Hagan with him apparently making out with some girl at his party last night. According to Barbara Holland, who is Nancy Wheeler's best friend, the couple have been hooking up since the seventh grade.

Nancy Wheeler. She's been on Val's mind since last night. It wasn't like the girl is oblivious about relationship between Nancy and Steve. She knows of the rumors that were going around the school about the two of them. All Val wants at the moment was to stop thinking about the pair. Couple? Ugh gross.

What she didn't know was how serious the two were because all she had heard was that the two were caught making out outside of school. No biggie. It's not like they were in love or anything. There's no way.

Steve was a player. There's no way he fell for a girl that fast.. But a girl like Nancy Wheeler? She is like the perfect girl. She's pretty, smart, and she has always been nice to Val. Plus, Nancy is totally out of Steve Harrington's league. She's a good girl and from what Val has learned since being here for a few weeks... Steve's the totally opposite.

Nancy would say hello or ask Val how her morning was going in first period sometimes. Yes, it was the bare minimum but it made a difference to Val. However, she wouldn't dare go as far as saying they were friends. They were the furthest thing from being friends, which didn't matter. They were civil to one another, and Val doubts that she knows about the history between Steve and her. There was no way she would still be being nice to her if she did.
