prompt: y/n and jake broke up, but they still own a little dog together and have been since they got together. Either of them are hesitant to give it up for the other so they share the custody and have it each week, which causes the broken couple to see each other every week again despite breaking apart.

"Come on Layla it's time to go home!" You shouted after your dog as she was running around in the park. Today was the day you and your ex boyfriend, Jake switch for the week. You got Layla after 2 years of being together and it felt perfect since it was a taste of what a future family could look like. But one thing led to another and before you knew it he was out the door and never came back. That day was as clear as light in your memories, and to this day you could still feel your heart ache from it.

"Jake? What are you doing?" You said as he was packing his bags when you got home from work.

"I can't talk right now, I really have to go"  he said zipping his bag closed and quickly ran down the stairs.

Barely even thinking you ran after him, seeking answers from anything you could see or hear. When you got downstairs Jake was hugging Layla and without even realising it you were crying silently. The tears were running down your cheeks and as you sniffled Jake changed his gaze from Layla to you.

"Y/N I can't explain it but I really have to go, I'm sorry that I can't give you answers. It will be best like that"

And all you remembered from that day further on was that you were exhausted from crying and while trying to texting him to get answers all you got was texts about him coming up to pick Layla, leading to a share custody. It was the only conversation you could keep going on with him, because if you tried to bring in the relationship or trying to get answers he either ignored them or talked about your dog.

Brining you back to reality again was Layla sitting by your leg, she came back when you shouted after her you just didn't realise it. Another thing was your phone that was buzzing in your pocket and had been for a minute or two. Picking it up you signed as you saw the messages.

Jake 5:30 pm
I'm here to pick up Layla, you're not answering the door?

Jake 5:35 pm
You okay in there? I'm guessing you and Layla are out maybe since she didn't react to the bell. Just let me know that nothing happened!

It made your heart flutter that he at least care for not only Layla but also you. But giving it too much attention would just hurt you. So you just took Layla back home again.
When you got back to the house you saw Jake sitting on the stairs of your porch, Layla immediately reacted and ran up to him. The sight was beautiful and not something you had seen in a while. Just Jake laughing while playing with Layla, your eyes started to burn from the tears threatening to fall making you breathe in and out as you tried to blink them away.
Whenever Jake picked her up you just said goodbye to her and with that you could just let him leave with her for the week. But with a sight like this, how could you let her go?

"Okay Layla it's time to go" he said and walked past you, not saying a word. And with that you felt like it was enough.

"When will you tell me what happened?" You blurted out, still with your back at him. Hesitating to turn around you then decided you had to because he wasn't answering at all.

Meeting his gaze you could see that behind those eyes were just guilt. He was rubbing his arm and tried to ignore your eyes but you were done now, you needed answers so you kept following his gaze until he would give up.
