Chapter 10
A FROWN forms on Headmistress Mildred's forehead. "What are you talking about? What do you mean she's dying? How can she be dying? She looks healthy earlier? This is not a good joke, Miss Gretel." Headmistress rambles on, but Miss Gretel clasps her hands and a lone tear falls from her eyes.
"I noticed it when she was brought to me the last time. You said she didn't have any magic. Have you forgotten? Any witch who turns 15 uses their magic as their lifeline?" Headmistress Mildred nods at her words. "It was baffling to me how a 19 year old witch have survived for years without her magic. Is it because she didn't receive her magic that she's not depending on it for her life?" Miss Gretel walks to her bookshelf. She picks out an old book bound in leather. "This is Danai's account on the witch that had her magic stolen." Dark bruises, pale, loose skin, sunken eyes, fainting sprees.
Headmistress Mildred flips through the pages, when Miss Gretel leaves her office and walks to Nasia's bed. She folds the sleeves of Nasia's school dress. A big blotch of black littered her arms. She's only now noticed how much paler Nasia is since she arrived at Yeliara. "Is she getting worse?"
Miss Gretel fixes Nasia's school dress before looking back at the headmistress. "It says on Danai's account that a witch cannot survive without magic. Some dies on the spot, but there are those that can last for a month."
Headmistress Mildred stands beside Nasia and caresses her forehead, then lays her hand flat. "Which one is she?"
Miss Gretel shakes her head, lowering it in sadness. "I don't know, Headmistress Mildred."
With her hand still on Nasia's forehead, Headmistress Mildred shuts her eyes and probes into Nasia's mind. But, it's like she's faced with a blank canvas. She sees nothing. She intended to jog through her memory to see if she really did not receive her magic or if it's stolen. She opens her eyes abruptly, panting heavily at the action. "There's nothing. Why didn't I see anything from her memories?"
"But that's impossible!" Miss Gretel checks for Nasia's pulses and it's still there. "Only corpses have no memories, Headmistress Mildred." They both stare at each other and Headmistress gathers her skirt, then walks to the door.
Before heading out, Headmistress Mildred turns to Miss Gretel. "Find out everything you can Nasia's situation. Until we learn the truth, let's keep this between us," she says with a stern face.
PROFESSOR Alrudor has been roaming the school hallways but has had no luck with finding Nasia's friends. He has bumped into his wife and almost forgot what he had to do. So, now both of them are in search of two young witches. They were on their way to the student's quarter when they found the two. "There you are! We've been looking for you for ages. Come with us," Professor Dahlia says.
Xena and Piper follow the two professors, confused. "Professor Dahlia, have you seen Nasia? We went to her room just now, but she wasn't there." Xena asks. Piper nods and looks at them with hopeful eyes. She has been feeling anxious since Nasia walked out on them at the hot spring.
The professors looked at each other, worry is evident on Professor Dahlia's face. "I think it's better for you to see her," she says. Professor Dahlia takes Xena's hands and pats them softly. "Be strong for, Nasia." Worry seeped into the darkest crevices of their hearts.
