There was fire dancing wildly around as the smoke clogged the night sky that covered the stars and moon. I slowly walked through the flames, wiping my eyes of constant tears as I cried out for anyone to hear me, only to be met with silence. Only the roaring of flames, and the crashing of debri. Not paying attention, I stumble over a hot piece of metal falling face first into the ground. My eyes shot open as thunder clapped, and what started out as a small sprinkling became a downpour. I slowly got up and wiped the tears from my face and looked around, still in the allyway I decided to camp out in. I took a deep breath and sat up, leaning back against the wall and looked up at the rain. "Another...dream..." I told myself softly. I stood up on the cardboard box I had laid on and looked down at my reflection in the puddle in front of me.
I examined my bags under my dark brown eyes, and how the dirt on my body made my caramel skin look a shade darker. I then noticed a small piece of trash stuck to my hair. The curls keeping it in place. I picked it out of the black mash of curls and tossed it in the dumpster beside me, and walked out into the dead street.
My stomach growled and I looked back at the dumpster for a second, but went on to the sidewalk and decided to head the corner store.Rain still poured down, and thunder continously clapped as I walked along the sidewalk, my bare feet making pitter-patter sounds on the wet concrete. My torn black oversized tee and shorts were completely soaked. I shiverd as I pressed on, making to the ginat, blue triceratops. Indicating I was close. Once to the building I peeked through the giant window and couldn't see anyone. I looked back into the parking lot and noticed a gray car in the. It faced away from the building, with a hand out the window with what looked like a cigarette. They were parked next to one of the gas pumps but it didn't look like they were getting gas.
I grinned and headed to the door, before grabbing the door knob, it suddenly swang open into me. Before I could react, the handle hit me square in the lip, and fell backwards, hitting the back of my head. "Sorry, Kid!!" A rugged voice said. Two guys wearing all black ran out with a small bag, and headed to the car.
"C'mon, let's go!" said the following guy, who also rushed out. They rushed to the car and immediately drove off. My ears rang as I slowly got up, wiping the blood from my mouth. I tore off one of my soaked sleeves and placed it over my lip. I then realized that the ringing in my ear was gone, but the store alarm was going off. I then heard sirens in the distance and hurried inside and immediately saw the owner lying on the ground and I froze.
Blood poured from side and shoulder, soaking his white flannel and left a pool of red around him. I just stood there for a second before realizing the sirens were coming closer, and bit my tongue and quickly grabbed whatever food could fit in my pocket and made my way to the back, rushing past the owner. "...h-help m..." I froze again as I heard his weakening voice. My body started to shake as I slowly looked back and saw him now on his side, reaching for me. I stared in confusion and fear. I then noticed the flashlights and quickly ran, grabbing an empy box by the back door on my way out.
I ran behind the building and into the allway between the tall apartments next to the store, keeping myself out of sight and off the street.
I slowed down after a block or two and sat down, panting heavily. I slowly collected myself and took a deep breath. I then realized my mouth was still bleeding and noticed my bloody sleeve is gone too. "I must have dropped in while grabbing food..." I told myself. I slowly got up and grabbed my box, heading back to my ally way.The rain had slowed to a sprinkle, so I wasn't as cold anymore, but my mouth was in pain. "Ay, kid." I froze and glaced behind me, and reconized the figure, and voice. It was the guy that hit me with the door. I didn't release he was wearing a mask that covered all but his mouth and eyes.
"Here." He tossed me small object that landed in my box, I looked at it and saw it was bandaids.
"You live around here?" I looked up and him and nodded, pointing at the allyway. He nodded back understand."You uh...need a place to crash?" My jaw dropped and I suddenly dropped my box. I then shook my head and turned towards him.
"Where? Why?" I aksed.
"Me and my crew we need some new workers. You work for us, we give you a place to stay. That simple." He said with a grin."Food?" I asked as my stomach growing. He chuckled and nodded
"Yes kid, food too."He responded with a chuckle. I was suspicious but willing. Anything is beter then a box or dumpster. I thought for a moment and looked him and asked
"Why me? Me...small, weak." I said. He nodded and kneeled down.
"Me and my boss have been watching you for some time now. Obviously we don't want to get involved with any police so...Plus with kids of his own, I would understand why he'd would send me to come see you." I took a deep breath and walked towards him, standing in front of him and looking up.
"C'mon, let's go!" I said, copping his friend from earlier. He laughed and began to lead me to his car.
"Have a name, Kid?""My name, Tora."
