A loud knock on the door woke Dylan up the next morning. Surprisingly he slept like a baby all through the night. He grumbled at whoever was interrupting his sound sleep and dragged himself out of bed. He wasn't completely awake until he opened the door and a well built six foot guy with brown hair and eyes walked into the bedroom with a pile of clothes in his hands. He carefully placed them on the bed and turned around to face a fully awake Dylan.
"Good morning alpha. Alpha Martinez asked me to bring these to you -"
"Hold on. I think you're making a mistake... I'm not your alpha." Dylan interrupted, thinking the stranger in front of him was referring to Isabel and her dad.
"Where is Isabel?" He didn't wait for a reply and was already making his way outside the bedroom.
"She's on her usual morning run." The stranger who was behind Dylan replied.
'At least we have something in common.' he thought to himself.
"And you are?.."
"Fernando. I'm a delta in the pack but currently, I'm at your service." The stranger introduced himself, lowering his head in respect.
A delta comes after a beta in any pack and they are usually the warriors or the majority of the population in a pack.
Why would his mate assign a delta to him? Does she think he's that worthless?
Fernando on noticing the anger in Dylan's eyes and how hard he clenched his fists quickly said,
"I'm her cousin. She sent me here because.. she knows that I don't wanna be a warrior like my dad and the rest of my brothers."
Dylan's anger subsided after hearing that and slowly he unclenched his fists. He walked towards the bed and sat on the bench at the foot of the bed, tapping the spot beside him for Fernando to sit.
"Why don't you want to be a warrior?" He asked, immediately taking interest in Isabel's cousin.
He had all the qualities of a warrior, so why was he scared of becoming one?
"I loved the idea at first. I grew up training to become one but that changed when my dad was murdered two months ago by the Lakewood pack." Sadness glinted in Fernando's eyes as he explained his reason.
"Alpha Martinez only sent him there for business, but he never came back. I guess they felt he was a threat to them." he paused.
Dylan waited patiently for Fernando to gain his composure as it was obvious that he was struggling to keep his emotions in check.
"I don't want my mate to go through the same pain as my mom."
"I'm sorry about your dad." Dylan sympathized, feeling sorry for the teenager.
"It's okay. Alpha Martinez already dealt with the pack." He replied with pride.
"You mean Isabel"
Fernando nodded in affirmation.
"She took out almost half of the pack all by herself because she felt responsible for my dad's death."
Dylan found it hard to believe. How can a single werewolf kill that much number? Does this mean that the myths about the alphas of the Pride pack are true?
He chose not to bother himself with the thought and concentrate on the ongoing conversation.
"So, what happened to the pack after that?" His curiosity led him to ask.
"She assigned one of my brothers to be the alpha until the six year old son of the deceased alpha turns eighteen."
Dylan was right all along. The Pride pack doesn't lay a finger on any pack unless they cross the line. Knowing that his mate spared the only heir of the Lakewood pack has made Dylan see her in another light. She wasn't conquering packs like his dad had assumed, she was only taking revenge for the murder of her uncle.
"Why did you call me alpha when you walked into the room?" Dylan decided to change the subject of conversation since it was a sensitive topic. He didn't want Fernando to relive the ugly memory of his father's death.
"That was alpha Martinez's order."
She was the alpha of the pack, so why would she give such an order? There is no pack in the world with two alphas and he doesn't think it will begin with the Pride pack. Any other pack but the Pride pack.
"Let's skip the formalities, okay? Call me Dylan."
"I wish I can."
"Of course you can."
"I dare not go against our alpha."
Dylan ran his fingers through his hair. This is going to be a lot harder than he thought.
"I don't want any mix up when we go out in public." He tried to make Fernando understand why he shouldn't refer to him as alpha. He doesn't want the pack members thinking he sees himself equal to their alpha.
"Alpha Martinez will make it clear to the entire pack in her own time." Fernando assured him.
"I'm just glad I'm the first one to meet you." He wore an accomplished smile on his face that prevented Dylan from arguing any further.
"What's the plan, then?"
