Evergreen woke up in a puddle of sweat, dripping into the darkness. She slowly started to calm herself down, and went to roll over to go back to sleep, when she realized something.
She wasn't in her own bed.
She immediately panicked, feeling sick. In her small room there was an adjoining bathroom, and she immediately rushed to the toilet. As she was getting sick, she realized she heard the creak of a door behind her, but she was too ill to look up. When her stomach finally decided to calm down, she looked up to see a hooded man leaning against the door.
"Who....who are you....?" Evergreen could barely get the words out, having problems breathing.
"Not your concern at the moment. I'll tell you once you are done throwing your guts up." The hooded man disappeared back into the darkness, and right on cue, Evergreen started getting sick again, more violently this time. Even when her stomach's contents was empty, she continued to dry heave. She cried out from the pain, hoping it would end soon.
An hour passed and her stomach finally gave up its tirade. She sat next to the toilet, just focusing on the sweet feeling of air, and when she was quiet for a moment, the hooded man came back and helped her get back to bed. He had a firm grip, but it wasn't necessarily a tight one. He was strong and could easily throw Evergreen if he wanted, something she made a mental note of. She laid down, whimpering, her stomach still cramping.
"I'm sorry, kid. The sickness sucks but it'll be over eventually, until your body gets used to everything. Your reaction is one of the worst ones I have seen in a long time." The hooded man continued to watch over her, and helped her when he could. He felt guilty, this girl should not be here, but he didn't think too hard about it. He had a job to do, and he was going to complete it, whether he felt guilty or not. She was chosen for a reason.
Once she had a break from the pain, she took a short nap. It was exhausting being so sick, and she got all the rest she could. When she woke up and had a second, she rolled over to look at the hooded man, and they made eye contact. She shivered, something about his eyes did not feel right. She was compelled to make conversation.
"Where am I?" She asked, almost sounding like a curious child.
"Where you need to be." He said bluntly, still staring at her with an almost dead expression.
"Why am I here?" She asked, now slightly frustrated.
"Because this is where you need to be." He stated, almost sounding amused, but she couldn't quite tell. Now she was frustrated.
"Is there anything you can tell me? Anything at all, or are you going to continue making an ass of yourself?" Evergreen glared at him, having sat up.
His eye twitched, and within a blink of an eye, he was above her. His glare was scalding, making her avoid eye contact.
"I am the one thing standing between you and death right now. I would change your tone and show a bit of tact before I decide to stop covering your presence with my own." He spoke authoritatively, keeping an even tone but firming his voice. It was strong, and Evergreen was visibly shaken by his speed and overall existence. This made him pleased, and he backed off, Evergreen laying back down and facing the wall.
She stayed there, unmoving until she heard a woman's voice behind her.
"Is she here? Oh good gracious, thank you Quinn! I'll have to pay you back for doing this for me!" The lady sounded so sweet and kind, a far cry from her supposed protector.
"Any time, ma'am. No need to pay me back, I was happy to help." And with the end of his statement, the hooded man, now known as Quinn, left the room.
Evergreen turned around, sitting up, and made eye contact with the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. Her extremely curly hair covered her whole back, long and untamed. She had the brightest blue eyes Evergreen had ever seen, and had a blue rose styled into her hair that matched. Evergreen was in awe, and couldn't help but gaze at the woman. She wore all white, from the sweater she adorned, to her slacks, to her perfectly pearly sneakers. She spoke of elegance, and enchanted the entire room with her presence to the point you could've swore she was glowing.
"I am so sorry, sweet girl, my name is Maddison. I hope Mr.Quinn wasn't too hard on you, I know he can be a bit...intimidating at times." Maddison grabbed Evergreen's hand, holding it gently in between both of her own.
"Maddison! I've been looking for you!" Evergreen squealed triumphantly.
"Shush! I know you have, darlin'. But now is not the time for hootin' and hollerin', if He knows you are here, I don't know what will happen to ya." Maddison's voice was soothing and coated with a thick southern accent, causing Evergreen to listen to her closely.
"Wait, who is He? And what is happening?" Evergreen asked, immediately worried.
"I...I can't say. If I say, He might hear us. You don't know anything about Him, and that is for the best. You know about me, and that's how I was able to reach you." Maddison looked behind herself, as if she felt eyes on her back.
"Can I at least know how you are okay in a situation like this? I am bewildered to see you in such good shape, since you haven't been seen since I was a little girl." Evergreen blinked a few times, still enamored with Maddison's beauty.
"Ah, you see, it's because He is my husband."
