Wen Xu was practising his sword when suddenly his father and elder brother Wen Zhuliu walked into the arena. He stopped and bowed to his father. "Father, may I know why are you here? You could have summoned me."

"Ah, my son. Sometimes it's good for my health to walk around the palace." said the King. Both of his sons chuckled at his words. "What are you laughing at? An old man like me surely needs to exercise regularly."
They stopped laughing and crown-prince Zhuliu said "It is true that an old man needs to exercise regularly "
"But you are surely not an old man when young concubines are constantly getting added to your harem, Father" chimed in Wen Xu. Now, it was the King's turn to laugh at his 2 son's word. He said "You truly are my children. Now, I must tell you why I came here. The matter is of grave importance. "
"Is it about the peace negotiations?" asked Wen Xu
It was the only thing that was giving him sleepless nights for the past few days. He was afraid that he would be told to accompany his father and brother to the frontier for the peace negotiations with Gusu.

His suspicions were confirmed after getting a nod from his father. "I know that you don't want to go for the peace negotiations after you got defeated by Nie Huaisang. But my son you must come with us in order to show our sincerity." "Yes, Father." he obeyed.

Nie Huaisang. Only that name was enough to make his blood boil. He was angered each time he had to remember his defeat at the hands of Nie Huaisang. He has never been defeated before. He knew he would have won that day if it wasn't for his sister's foolishness. He would have won if he didn't have to retreat because of the drum beats he heard. When he rushed back to the camp he saw that it was none other than his sister Wen Ning who was beating the drums, ending the war and accepting their defeat.

"But I wish to speak of something different," said the Emperor. Seeing his father hesitate Wen Xu spoke up "The Lans want the peace negotiations to last longer this time. So, they are offering the hand of Princess Lan YuMing, daughter of Lord Qi, to be your bride." "What ?" exclaimed Yinuo, " I do not want to get married, not now, not to a stuck up Lan 'i am better than all these peasants' princess."

"Brother, please. You must marry her in order to execute our plan of invading Gusu more smoothly. Lord Qi is already our ally. But if you marry his daughter he would be more than an ally and willing to help. Besides, marrying her would give you the legal right to the throne of Gusu. Not to mention that she is extremely intelligent and beautiful." "Da-ge if you are so much interested in her, why don't you marry her yourself. I don't need to marry her to be the ruler of Gusu. I am capable enough of doing it on my own with our large army ." The Emperor and his eldest son looked at each other as if they were having a silent conversation. Getting permission from the Emperor, Wen Zhuliu took out a rolled parchment from his sleeve and kept it on a table near where they were standing. "I hope that you change your mind, my son because this is for the best." said Wen Ruohan and with this they went away.

Wen Xu had no mind to look at the parchment. But curiosity got the better of him. He slowly went towards the table, picked up the parchment and unrolled it.

On the parchment He saw a portrait of the most beautiful face he had ever seen. Her hair was like a cascading waterfall, decorated with a jade hairpin. Her lip, eyes, the curve of her neck, her beautiful wrists mesmerised him. He forgot everything about him not wanting to go to the frontier and not wanting to marry her. That very moment he knew that this woman belonged to him and not to anyone else. She deserved to be with him, Wen Xu, the brave General and prince of Qishan, feared by men all over the five states and the only one alive whose skills matched with the Devil Incarnate, Nie Huaisang. He had made up his mind. He is going to marry and make her be with him.

He started to examine her painting more carefully, as if wanting to tear her portrait out of the parchment and keep it locked deep inside his heart, the one she where would be belonging from now and something that would belong to her forever because the Qishan prince for first time in his life has truly lost to someone as he was defeated by a smiling portrait in the battlefield of love. Her eyes though were the most beautiful ones but they had glints of sadness. And that evening, Wen Xu found himself promising to make her the happiest person in the world.
