You know something's up when your classmates say good morning to you.

Especially when you're in seventh grade.

That's why as soon as I walked into my class, I knew something was wrong. My classmates were smiling- yes, smiling, and not the usual "I'm about to prank you" smile- at me as they chorused these foreign words.

I stared at them.

They stared back.

Finally, I went to sit next to Alex, who looked like she was about to Katie the entire situation ( that's Alex speak for 'have a total meltdown') as she whispered, "What's up with them? They've been so- so- polite!"

If you've ever been in middle school, you'll get it.

"Gross," I agreed.

Suddenly, Adrian Myers leaned backwards and hissed, "Hey- gimme a pen, weirdo."

I rolled my eyes. Unfortunately, he hadn't changed.

"Get one from Steven or something."

"Don't wanna. He's acting weird. Like, he's being nice."

That made me even more confused. Why was everyone acting like they were good people? I mean, are the words "good people" even in standard seventh grader vocabulary?

"Adrian, if you would like to talk, please share it with the rest of the class." Miss Natalie said in a teacher-y monotone. I almost fell out of my seat- I could've sworn she wasn't there before, but now she was leaning so close that I could see up her nose.

"No thanks," Adrian muttered.

Miss Natalie narrowed her eyes at him. Her smile was sickeningly sweet, and so fake that it looked drawn on.

A sudden, faint memory washed over me, too light to put my finger on- but I knew what it meant.

Trouble. Run. Or, more accurately, Ohhhh nooooo we need to get outta hereeeee...

I grabbed Alex's knee so she knew something was wrong. Miss Natalie was staring at Adrian with her smile still radiant. "That was not polite, Adrian. I think we should punish you now. Shouldn't we, class?"

Without a word, our classmates got up and started marching towards us.

"EEEEEEP! Adrian, get your butt UP!" Alex squealed, yanking me out of my seat.

Adrian scampered out of his seat and we bolted out of the classroom.
