In a village besieged by brutal Lycan forces, chaos reigns as the villagers struggle to defend themselves with inadequate weapons. The Lycan alpha watches proudly as his son leads the attack, but he is troubled by the son's refusal to take a mate, a requirement for future leadership. The chief, Andrew, discusses sending Sarah away to protect her, despite the stigma surrounding the village pariah's only living relative, who supplies the villagers with wolfsbane to ward off the Lycans. Meanwhile, Liam Hawthorne, a friend of Sarah's and nephew of the pariah, tends to the garden, where he grows wolfsbane. He struggles with the impending threat of the Lycans and the pressure of his potential role in their world.
When the Lycans arrive, tensions escalate. Liam is confronted by the alpha, Derek, who discovers the presence of wolfsbane and offers a deal to save the village and Liam's aunt. Liam is to become a temporary mate to Derek's son, Kieran, who resists the arrangement. Faced with the choice of his family's safety or his own desires, Liam reluctantly accepts the deal, setting the stage for a complex relationship fraught with danger and obligation.
