"Valley Cats" is set in southwestern Canada in the 2010s.
Supernatural:
There are nine Clans, each very different from each other. What could be considered StarClan is referred to as SpiritClan, with their territory called the Sacred Sky. The cat-angels basically fly around in the sky and live on clouds. Their version of the Dark Forest is the Frozen Forest, and while SpiritClan is bright and warm, this is very dark and extremely cold.
Instead of nine lives, leaders receive a gift from a spirit. It could be anything from a superpower like reading the mind of a cat when holding their paw, or something such as the ability to burn things your nose touches. Depending on the leader, it could be rather neutral or very invasive to the world around them. In some Clans, the cat has the right to not tell anyone what their gift is, but in others the leader must disclose it to any degree of the public (i.e. Relatives, healers, senior warriors, everyone, or all Clans).
History:
Roughly fifty years ago, a group of cats congregated in the valley. Some were from a Clan or Tribe, but most were kitty-pets and cats already living in the surrounding area. The cat to found the first Clan was a tom named Shadespots. His mate had died on the journey there, so he raised his two kits alone: Barkkit and Rootkit. Shadespots became the leader of the cats of the forests, which he named TreeClan. Over the years he met many cats, with two of the most notable being Swift from the grassland and Spike from the mountains.
Swift eventually founded FieldClan in the open air. Their territory took up the vast meadows, as well as the islands in the lake and even the swamp on the other side of the stream. Spike had lived her entire life in the mountains, and was very protective of her territory. Sometime after the establishment of FieldClan, she fell in love with an unnamed tom and had a litter of kits. One of her offspring made friends with some FieldClan apprentices, who eventually went to live with Spike, who became Spikestar after she founded StoneClan.
There is a rumor, however, that Spike was actually a Tribe cat with the full name Spike of Twisted Bramble. This would explain how she was famous for hunting the fierce prey of the harsh terrain, and her infamous aggression towards others, especially those who visited the Moonpond or Moonstream, which she guarded fiercely. For a while, the three Clans lived in peace, with few conflicts.
Shadestar's two kits had grown into warriors when the TreeClan deputy died suddenly. Since the leader was getting old, he left the Clan to decide which brother was going to be deputy. A civil war broke out, with both toms leaving TreeClan with their companions to start a group of cats where they could be in charge. Barkstar created PineClan and claimed the conifer and birch trees, while Rootstar founded WoodClan in the western woodland.
Sometime after the two leaders had died of natural causes, many FieldClan cats had wanted to live full-time on the lake islands, or the marsh across the stream. FieldClan was eventually split up and renamed MeadowClan. The other cats formed LakeClan is the islands and marsh, but later split into DeltaClan and MireClan.
StoneClan, being the largest territory, had been in a civil war for many moons. Finally, two Clans emerged: RockClan to the northwest and CliffClan to the northeast. There were rumors of more StoneClans, but none could be proven. This mystery group has since been referred to as IceClan, MistClan, and StormClan.
