"We've got weather gauge, shall we draw it upwind?" Jacob asks excited to finally be in naval combat after a long wait. Crow and Sarah come up behind him, Crow patting the lad's shoulder as he turns to Mr. Crisp and Ms. Merino; "Aye, and cross the T. Hard to port Mr. Crisp! I'll have her into the wind as high as she'll bear Ms. Merino!"
The only things to be heard for what felt like minutes were the chaotic yelling of sailors, crying from the seagulls and the water hitting the side of the ship. Vekas quickly joined next to Jacob whilst grabbing and quickly looking over a spear. Smooth edge, not much chipping and a fine bit of serration on the edge. Satisfied, he joined Jacob on the ledge over the watery abyss and listened to his cousin's speech.
"All right, ya fish killers! We come all this way for a proper fight, and now we'll get it!" "So let's enjoy the fight like it may be our last, shall we?!" They both shout excitedly, earning an excited bunch of cheers as they hook themselves onto the chains behind them.
The harpooners held their breath as the beast snaked its way towards the ship. Only when the ship turned around and the sound of raging bagpipes did they release their breath and take a whiff of the gunpowder overhead as the whizzing cannonballs bash into the sea and beast, bruising the shell in some instances.
"Beastie's only gotten angrier, It ain't gonna backdown" "Great, bigger target up close and personal. Crew up aloft, Ms. Merino!" Crow barks out the order whilst hanging off a railing. "Bet you a day's worth of my ration's someone's going to get scarred!" Vekas deals with Jacob all the while keeping his eye on the enraged leviathan. "Your on Dr. Fishface" The excitable hunter quips back.
They tune back into their surrounding after the whizzing of arrows momentarily soars overhead, only to splash into the leviathans flesh and the sea it swims in. It doesn't even flinch from the steel arrows imbedded in its head, and seems to prompt it to dive!
"Jacob, go get the buoy!" Vekas orders, whilst unhooking his harness, the other hunters following closely behind as they scurry back onto the deck, most of them irritated that they couldn't get a nice jab in. After a moment for him to take his breath whilst sitting down on a barrel. It's deceptively hard work on your legs and back leaning over the railing after all.
Returning to his job, he looks over the edge to look at the buoy after being tossed around, it's clear something is missing. "Clever fish, It's gone upwind. Wait for the word!" Crow yells with a slight tone of frustration, turning his back to the sea to address his new orders to the crew, until Vekas catches his attention; "Captain, Something's off. Why is the beastie staying in one spot?"
"I'll tell you why: the lines been severed!" Jacob exclaims agitatedly, gesturing back to the useless buoy. Everyone was silent for what felt like minutes, when it was just a moment until Vekas felt a weight on his head, and a white head with a yellow beak enter his vision. "It's below us!" Crow utters with surprise, just intime for the ship to be tossed onto its side once more!
The brickleback jumps out of the sea with a demonic screech, seeming to take great pleasure in startling the hunters and throw valuable supplies and weapons into the deep, whilst slamming down and taking a deep bite onto the starboard side of the ship.
"Wriggly bits, incoming!" Vekas warns everyone of the incoming tentacles, some of the sailors parrying in time whilst others are caught in their grasp, Vekas included.
"Bloody fucking tentacles!" He curses in rage, pulling out one of his many quills from his coat and jabbing it into the point where the tentacle splits into three. Having hit a nerve, the tentacle spasms a bit before throwing Vekas into a sail and tearing through it, finally hitting one of the railing of the stern, audibly cracking both the stern and probably one of his bones.
"Mother of god that stings!" he roars loudly, looking back up to the tentacle, only to see the beast looking at him with fascination and rage. "Hello to you too beautiful!" He greets sarcasticly, picking up a broken piece of railling and throwing it like a spear into one of the beasts damaged shell segments.
Turns out two spears hit the same mark as Jacob throws one a harpoon at the same spot, injuring the beast and forcing its retreat back into the water. "Nice shot Jacob, but I'd say mine is better!" "Now is not the time boys!" Sarah shuts up Vekas before he could get Jacob going.
"I'd say we got a moment to catch our breath again eh?" Jacob asks loudly, double checking on a newbie he hid for safety, only to see the boy look on in horror, with a shout "Look out Jacob!". Following his gaze, he only recieves a long green noodle to the chest and sending him flying!
"Uncle, we got a man overboard!" Vekas shouts out, Crow barking out orders and directions madly, Ms. Merino repeating just as alarmed. Quickly pulling out hi spyglass quickly, it does'nt take long for him to notice the Brickleback going after Jacob underwater. "It's going after him!"
From the distance, he could see the Brickleback rising out once more with its maw wide open and water spilling out from the side. Only at the very last second does his cousin manage to slip out, and dodge another bite as the beast dives, dragging him down with it.
Landing on its back after being flung once again and stuck between its shell, he takes out his sword and stabs it in its soft flesh, not expecting to rear up YET AGAIN, and shake him off.
"I got this one" Vekas yells as he runs fowards with his sword drawn, ignoring the ache of his bones, he jumps at the last second, and after grabbing an exposed arrow on its soft underbelly and pulling himself up, he stabs the beast in its jugular, raining black blood all over him as the beast falls onto its back and seems to bleed out.
The Brickleback has perished.
"Deep breath Vekas" He says to himself as water surround him, dragging him down as he moves up to the snout and saws through its horn using his sword. unaware of the tentacle wrapping around his legs and squezing like its never squeezed before. The last thing he sees before he blacks out is a bunch of bodies diving into the water and swimming down towards him.
