It was a peaceful night in the kingdom, the only sounds that could be heard were the wind whistling though the alleys and the rustling of the leaves on the trees of the forest.

One thought, given the silence, that everyone would have to sleep in the castle.

But that wasn't true. The young princess, however, was wide awake.
She lay in her bed, reading a book.
It was impossible for her to fall asleep.

All evening and night she had this weird oppressive feeling. And it just wouldn't go away. It was such a feeling of fear, like something terrible was about to happen.

She just couldn't get rid of it. No, on the contrary it got worse and worse.
With every second that passed, the pressure around her heart increased.

Frustrated, she put the book down with a sigh. She couldn't sit still anymore.
With a sigh, she threw herself back on the pillows.
She couldn't take it anymore. So she threw back the covers and got up from her bed.

Now she was pacing up and down her room. From one side to the other, over and over again.

But then she stopped. She looked out the window towards the edge of the forest.

Then something moved. It was on the way to the edge of the forest. Quickly. Not really that far off. She couldn't really make out what it was. It was too far away. But it looked very much like a human. A human with a large bundle.
It seemed really weird to her.

But then it disappeared into the depths of the dark forest. But she tried not to worry too much about it, it would surely be something very mundane again. Just like the last time she had this feeling.
So she turned again and walked quickly towards the door. Even if her feelings had deceived her last time, you could never be too sure that everything was okay. Besides, she wouldn't have been able to stand it in this room any longer anyway.

Her footsteps alone could be heard echoing down the dimly lit corridor. In the candlelight, her figure cast unsightly shadows on the walls.
She had no idea where she was going, so she just let her feet go where they wanted.

Suddenly she found herself in a pitch-black corridor, every single candle was no longer lit. Still, she recognized exactly where she had landed, at the door of her son's chamber. Only it was open a crack.

There it was again. Once it was gone even for a few seconds it always came back twice as strong. This devastating fear wasn't so great that she couldn't sit still anymore. No, instead she took on such a fear that she wanted to run for her life and at the same time she felt petrified.

Slowly she moved towards the door and wasn't even a hand's breadth away from opening it. But then she starts. There was blood.

A chill ran down her spine and a shock ran through her bones.
Eyes wide, she pushed open the door.

Everything looked the same except for the trail of blood that ran from the door to Ethan's bed. The bedding was spread out on the floor. And Ethan was nowhere to be seen.

She kept telling herself that she just had bad dreams. It couldn't be that this feeling was right this time. no She ruffled her hair as she stepped closer to the bed. He was gone. It couldn't be that the world was so cruel to her. Not her son. No. It just couldn't be right.

She slowly sank to her knees. Shaking her head doubtfully over and over again. She couldn't understand what had happened here. And so she sat there on her knees with tears rolling down her cheeks.

In a traumatized state, she seemed oblivious to anything, only repeating her expressions of disbelief over and over again.

This is how the princess was found the next morning. Still crying on her knees. Still oblivious to her surroundings. In the blood of her missing son.
