Unknownʼs POV
Little by little, the world's slowly losing its light and its beauty. I might be wrong since the people that surrounds me are living their lives in the way they possibly can to make it worth it and fun. Various of carts filled with kinds of goods are parked in the sideways while people browses them, horses strapped with the carriages burdened with loads of passengers riding towards their destination, and people walking along their friends, families, and lovers with their smiles that brightens their face just like how the sun gives us the harsh sunlight that burns my skin.
The place may be bright and crowdy but there's dark places that looms with shadows with its intention to bring some chaos are just in the alley, waiting for its prey. Even in the light there are shadows, but in the dark? It will be always dark without the light guiding you, it will swallow you whole just like how your thoughts swallow you with its dark and unwanted words that forces you to succumb and surrender in the dark.
My hair swishes side to side slightly touching the dusty vibrating ground with my long skirt that's been dirtied throughout my journey. I glance from places to places in hopes that something might catch my interest at least before going into another place, looking for something - hoping for nothing. Simply following where fate might lead me. Perhaps into the nothingness, or into something that helps me in my situation. Every little help is already a big help for me.
It's been decades, has it? It's been a decades of years that I've been a stray in this wide world with no purpose. Ah, is it purpose that I've been looking for? Or simply answers to my questions that may be always a question that will be left unanswered? Maybe all this time I've been looking for a purpose. I participated in wars in which I had regret with all these nightmares that keeps haunting me every time I try to close my eyes. It's already been a hundreds of years but I can still see clearly how my deceased comrades fell lifeless into the ground, and then I remembered their words. Their dreams. Their smiles whenever they talk about bringing peace into their families. And how the light in their eyes fades away as they talk about sacrificing themselves just to protect the people they love. Then suddenly you just see how they quickly fall into the ground with their eyes open, only gazing into nothingness.
I took many lives just for the sake of finding purpose. The sword I had yielded is now rusty but the blood of the people I had slain will always be there. Blood. My eyes casts on the ground while everything that moves around me stops. My heart is beating faster than normal yet it doesn't shock me anymore. It's always like this. It's been always like this.
FLASHBACK
"Are you sure about this,-?" A woman with a blurry face asks me with her voice laces with concern. "You could die in the middle of the war, you could lose! Are you really going to throw away your life away in a war with an unsure victory? What about your dreams? Didn't you say before that you're going to find something that might change your life, -?"
I lay my hand on her trembling shoulder with her hands clenched tightly on my undershirt that she's currently packing for me. I gave her one of my practiced smile in hopes that it would ease her worries for a little.
"-," I whispered her name softly as I could before taking a deep breath and letting it all out. "I'm going to war just so you could be safe, so your future could be safe. Didn't you also told me before that you have dreams to reach ever since you were young? I'm simply trying to protect that, and the other people. If winning the war costs me my life then I'm willing to pay for it." I hold her hand with my free hand and hold it close to my chest, to let her feel my beating heart. "Life might be unfair for most of people, life might give you a situation that may be too expensive for you to pay, but worry not. I'll pay it all for you. I'll do everything for you."
