Chapter 1: The Honored One

The village of Konoha was alive.

Lanterns cast a warm, festive glow over streets packed with smiling faces. The air was thick with the scent of grilled squid and sweet dango, punctuated by the laughter of children and the cheerful shouts of vendors. It was a celebration of victory, a memorial for the day the Fourth Hokage had defeated the Nine-Tailed Fox.

For one small, blonde-haired boy, it was a day of mourning.

Naruto Uzumaki moved through the throng like a ghost, his shoulders slumped and his hands shoved deep into his pockets. The vibrant joy of the festival was a wall he couldn't penetrate; the smiles of the villagers turned to cold glares when they landed on him, and their laughter died into venomous whispers. Every year on this day, the glares grew sharper, the whispers crueler. This was the night his annual nightmare began.

He couldn't stand it any longer. Slipping away from the crowded streets, he sought refuge in the quiet shadows, his path leading him inevitably toward the looming darkness of the Forest of Death.

He didn't notice the figures detaching themselves from the crowd to follow him.

Inside the forest, the festive sounds were replaced by the chirping of crickets and the rustle of unseen things in the undergrowth. Naruto sat on a tree root, tracing patterns in the dirt with a stick, when the snap of a twig made him look up. A ring of men, their faces twisted with hatred and smelling of sake, had surrounded him. In their hands, they held farming tools and rusty kunai.

"Why?" Naruto asked, his voice trembling as he scrambled to his feet. "Why are you always hurting me? I haven't done anything to you!"

"Done nothing?" one of the villagers sneered, his words slurring. "You demon! You're the monster that tore our families apart!"

"No! You're wrong! I'd never do that!" Naruto cried, tears welling in his bright blue eyes.

"Shut up, you demon!" another roared, brandishing a sickle. "Tonight, we finish the Fourth Hokage's work!"

The circle tightened, the glint of sharpened metal reflecting in Naruto's terrified eyes. They were about to lunge, to end his miserable existence, when the air itself seemed to ripple.

A figure that hadn't been there a moment before now stood between Naruto and the mob. He was an old man, tall and slender, with a shock of stark white hair. He stood with an unnerving straightness, a simple black blindfold covering his eyes.

"My, my," the old man said, his voice smooth and calm, carrying an odd, playful authority. "What a lively party. Though, it seems one of the guests isn't having much fun."

"Get lost, old man!" a villager spat. "This is none of your business. We're just killing a demon!"

The old man tilted his head, a faint, unnerving smile playing on his lips. "A demon? I don't see a demon. All I see is a pack of jackals surrounding a helpless child."

"Shut up, you fucking old man!" a villager bellowed, charging forward with a kunai.

Then, something impossible happened. The kunai stopped. Not blocked, not parried. It just… stopped. Inches from the old man's face, it hung suspended in the air as if frozen in amber.

"You…" the villager whispered, his eyes wide with shock and fear.

A soft click was the only sound. The villager's head lolled to the side at an impossible angle, and his body crumpled to the ground. The old man hadn't appeared to move at all.

The rest was a blur of motion too fast to follow. A flash of movement here, a choked gasp there. In seconds, the forest clearing fell silent, the only sound the dripping of blood onto the fallen leaves. The old man stood amidst the bodies, not a single speck of dirt on his clothes.

He turned, and the space between him and Naruto seemed to fold, placing him instantly before the trembling boy. He knelt, his presence surprisingly gentle. "You alright, kid?"

Naruto could only nod, too stunned to speak.

The next morning, Naruto awoke in an unfamiliar room. It was simple, clean, and filled with the soft light of dawn. The old man was sitting at a small table, sipping tea.

He gestured to the seat opposite him. "So, kid," he began once Naruto had sat down. "Do you want to be strong?"

Naruto's head snapped up, a spark of his old fire returning. "Yes! I want to become strong so I can become Hokage! Then I'll protect this village and everyone will have to respect me!"

The old man took a slow sip of his tea. "Hokage?" he asked, his tone laced with something like pity. "Why would you want to bleed for a village that celebrates your suffering? That isn't a dream, kid. That's a collar they put on you."

"But... they'll accept me if I'm the Hokage!" Naruto insisted. "The Third Hokage told me they just hate me because they're afraid of what they don't understand!"

"He lied," the old man said bluntly, setting his cup down. "They don't fear you. They hate you. They hate you because the monster that nearly erased them from existence is living inside your stomach. The Nine-Tailed Fox."

The world seemed to tilt under Naruto's feet. "The... Nine-Tails? Inside me?" he whispered, his hand drifting to his stomach. "Who... Who would do that to me?"

"The one who thought a village was more important than his own son," the old man said, his voice devoid of emotion. "The one who sealed it inside you was your father, Naruto. The Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze."

The silence that followed was heavy and absolute, broken only by Naruto's shaky breaths.

"You should ask the Nine-Tails the rest of that story yourself, sometime," the old man continued, rising to his feet. "But all that aside... let's forget the village. Forget their hate. Let's focus on you. Do you want the power to make sure no one can ever touch you again?"

Naruto looked up, his eyes filled with a storm of confusion, grief, and a burning new resolve. He gave a slow, deliberate nod. "Yes... Yes, I do."

A wide, confident grin spread across the old man's face. "Good answer. By the way, I forgot to introduce myself."

He reached up and slightly lowered his blindfold, revealing a glimpse of an eye that seemed to hold the entire sky within it—a brilliant, piercing blue that pulsed with unimaginable power.

"My name is Satoru Gojo. But you can call me Gojo-sensei."

He clapped his hands together with theatrical flair. "Alright! Let's get started with your tortur—" He coughed. "I mean, training."

Naruto stared at him, a weary, deadpan expression on his face. "You were about to say torture, weren't you?"

Gojo just winked.
