Best Friend - Rex Orange County

it was now 7:49pm, and both of matt's brothers had left. the entire suite was seated in the living room while strawberry blonde, who was actually nick nelson, tried desperately to start a bonding experience by talking to his new roommates.

matt had not said more than his name since being here. he laughed when the group made jokes, and he listened to everyone, he just didn't have much to say.

the blonde boy with more tamed hair and these piercing grey eyes had also not opened his mouth other than his name. draco malfoy. what kind of medieval bullshit is that name? he hasn't laughed at any jokes. he isn't listening, just buried in his phone. he is sitting here with the group though, we can at least give him that.

the fluffy haired blonde, chase, made most of the jokes. he was really quite funny, but also quite high. he was openly hitting a cart he had in his pocket every so often. no one really minded though, or at least didn't say.

ricki smoked, she had her own cart. although hers was hidden deep down in her backpack she had with her. she was not brave enough to smoke on important days like this.

lastly was nick nelson. he seemed like a natural leader, trying his best to carry on conversation and include everyone, including ricki.

"did you figure anything out?" nick asked ricki.

she nodded.

"yeah, um- they said the next available space doesn't open up for another three days..."

"she can room with me." brown haired boy said. this was gray. took any opportunity for a line or a flirt toward ricki. she hated to admit it, but it made her stomach flip every time.

he was hot as fuck.

"you know what- we will figure that out when it comes down to it." nick offered, the group laughing slightly.

"i'm really sorry guys, i know it's probably lame to be stuck with a girl the first couple nights." she said.

she did feel bad.

"hey, don't even worry about it. makes the whole experience a little more interesting, hm?" nick said. ricki laughed, nodding.

"thanks nick."

"can we still party tonight?" gray asked, looking at ricki.

"oh my gosh yes of course- please, have a blast." she stuttered. the boys all smiled, chase and gray immediately walking toward the kitchen, opening the fridge that was filled with different beer and seltzers they all collectively brought.

"if you wanna crash in that room i'm sure i can figure out a way for me and someone else to sleep out on the couch for you." nick offered.

"i can sleep out here." matt chimes in.

"oh no- no oh my gosh i'm not gonna make you do that. if anything i'll sleep out here." she argued.

"no like- i don't care i can sleep literally anywhere." matt replied.

this was the most he talked all night. and it was in order to make ricki feel comfortable.

"how about- if you two aren't completely uncomfortable, i can just take the extra bed in your guyss room- assuming you two are sharing?"

matt and nick looked at each other, shrugged, nodded, turned back to me, and nodded.

"you guys don't seem like you'll try to get in bed with me while i'm sleeping. gray gives me a completely different vibe than that." ricki said.

the boys laughed, before matt stood up.

"i was gonna go start putting stuff away, i can help you get settled if you need." he said, looking at ricki.

"oh- sure, that's sweet yes thank you-" she said, quickly getting up and grabbing her suitcase and bags.

"i better go babysit these guys." nick said, standing and nodding off, before walking over to the kitchen.

matt lead the way to the room, closing the door behind them.

"ill have nick and i take the bunk, you can take the twin, unless you want the bunk-"

"no- no that's perfect thank you so much-" ricki said, quickly avoiding having to sleep any closer than she has to to anyone else.

matt climbed the ladder a step, throwing his sheets up, calling dibs on the top bunk.

if it were ricki, she would've chose the bottom.

maybe matt just likes the extra space.

"i'm sorry your room got messed up." matt said, starting to make his bed.

"it's okay, figures it would happen to me. i just feel bad i'm kind of fucking up your guys first days."

"hey- don't even worry about anything. you seem cool. I'm pretty sure everyone likes having you around so far." he said, leaning over the bed frame.

ricki smiled, starting to make her own bed.

"well i try." she said, her smile staying on her lips.

"ill probably stay sober tonight, and i have a feeling nick probably will too, so if you need anything you can come to me- im just gonna chill in here probably." he said.

"i don't think ill drink or anything- i mean- i probably would but something about me in a loft with five other boys doesn't sound like a safe environment for alcohol."

he laughed, nodding. "more like in a loft with that gray dude."

this made ricki laugh.

"well, i've got your back if you change your mind. ill ward off the boys." he said, holding up karate hands.

they laughed, and ricki smiled up at him in his bed.

"thanks matt. you're sweet." she said.

he smiled, nodding and climbing down the ladder, before pulling his suitcase out.

ricki unpacked as little as she needed to, knowing she'd just have to repack everything in just a few days.

she pretty much just made her bed and shoved all of her stuff in a corner.

she was grateful that the boys all seemed nice so far. she also wanted to redact her initial thought of wishing she had ended up in a dorm with ugly boys. she was very glad she was not stuck with a bunch of weirdos.

she hoped they wouldn't find her to be a weirdo.
