"Mom!" I shouted down the narrow hallway.
I threw clothes around in my closet aimlessly as I waited to hear a reply.
"Mom!" I tried again.
How wasn't she up yet? It was now seven thirty in the morning and usually around this time she was attempting to make breakfast. I grabbed a faded blue t-shirt that I found on the closet floor, pulled it over my head, pulled on a black pair of jeans and stalked down the stairs. I took each steep slowly trying not to let the steeps creek from under me. The lights where turned off and the shades in front of the windows didn't let in as much sunlight. When I got to the bottom of the stairs the lights flickered on.
"Surprise!"
I fell onto my butt from the sudden shouting and whipped my head around the room frantically. I was clutching onto my chest for dear life until I finally realized what was going on. There, in the middle of the kitchen, stood both my parents holding onto a white frosted cake with my bother standing right beside them. They were wearing the hugest smiles I'd ever seen on their faces.
"Happy birthday sweetheart," both my parents said in unison.
"Happy birthday," my brother said while giggling.
I slowly lifted myself off of the floor and beamed at them. I was one of those few teens who didn't really pay much attention to their birthday. It's not that I had forgotten about it completely, I just wouldn't have noticed until later on in the day.
"Thanks a lot you guys, this really means so much to me right now," I said as I proceeded to lick the frosting off of my finger that I had managed to swipe off the cake.
My mom playfully glared at me as she set the cake down on the table.
"Honey, I think our daughter forgot it was her birthday again," she said.
I cringed a little bit. I didn't really like hearing the word 'again' in that sentence. My dad surveyed me up and down before he replied to my mother.
"You know what, I think you're right dear,"
"Nicky forgot her birthday," my little brother said after he was finished laughing at me.
I felt a blush slowly creep up onto my face as I waved them off.
"No, no, no. I didn't forget," I said desperately.
"Yes sweetheart, I think you did," my father said as a deep chuckle escaped from his mouth.
I grabbed a slice of cake and then grabbed my book bag. Then proceeded to hug my family.
"I love you all for this but I should start walking to school now," I said while looking at the clock above the front door.
I locked my brother into a huge bear hug, then moved on to hug my parents. They kissed me good bye and I headed out the door.

I walked into school looking very flustered and unconsciously fixed my top. It felt so awkward making seventeen years old. It reminded me of how old I was getting. I sped up and made my way towards my locker, when suddenly, I was jumped from behind. My attacker had leaped onto my back and their legs wrapped around my waist in a death grip. I yelped in surprise and it took everything that I had to stay standing.
"Happy Birthday, yah old hag!" the attacker yelled and proceeded to plant a sloppy wet kiss onto my cheek.
"Charlie-ann! Get off of me," I hissed, but I knew I hadn't sounded as serious because I was giggling.
She climbed off of me and gave me the most suffocating bear hug I had ever experienced and I tried my hardest not to pass out. She then released me, smiled, and then skipped down the corridor. I shook my head while watching her receding form, then walking towards my locker to retrieve my chemistry book.

I walked into class and made a beeline towards my desk that was located towards the back. A few students wished me happy birthday and I sheepishly gave them a smile before giving them each a thank you. I glanced over at Tyler's desk and saw that he wasn't in yet. I sighed and sat down at my own desk. Did he even know that today was my birthday? I shook my head and gave myself a weak smile. Of course not, why would he? I gazed absent mindedly at the white board located to the front of the class and completely missed the body that made its way towards my desk. A hand tapped me on my shoulder and I spun around in surprise. My eyes went wide as I noticed who it was. Tyler stood in front of me with a goofy grin on his face. His dark brown hair was ruffled, and he kind of looked out of breath. I swore my heart skipped a beat. Actually, I think my heart might have stopped for a minute or two. I made a mental note that this crush business might just end up killing me one day.
"Hey," he said to me.
"Hi," I managed to get out.
I mentally congratulated myself for being able to manage a coherent response.
"So," he started "I heard that today was your birthday?"
I bit my bottom lip and slowly nodded my head. I hadn't noticed it was there but he slowly pulled his hand from behind his back and showed me a cupcake. It looked as if it was vanilla flavored and had been decorated with purple frosting, topped with sprinkles.
"It isn't much but..." he trailed off and looked at me expectantly.
He stretched his hand out towards me so that I could take the cupcake. A huge incoherent smile was plastered on my face as I reached for the cupcake. My fingers brushed his, and it took everything within me to not drop the darn thing.
"Thank you so much Tyler," I said as I grinned down at the cupcake.
"No problem," he said.
He looked up as our chemistry teacher walked into the classroom. Tyler cleared his throat and looked back towards me. I shifted slightly.
"Are you still coming over to my house to continue the project?" he asked.
"Yes," I replied.
My face heated just thinking about the idea.
"Great," he said while smiling, then he walked away because Mr. George stared asking for students to take their seats.
For the remainder of class, I didn't take any notes, I didn't pay attention to what the teacher was saying, heck I didn't even know what today's topic was even about. The only thing I did was stare at the cupcake that was positioned on my desk in front of me thinking, he knew.
