CHAPTER ELEVENAfter a few minutes of driving, most of the horde had gave up, leaving behind a few chasing full sprint after them. John wasn't looking good; sweat dripped down his face. He looked in the rear view mirror at his bloodshot eyes, shaking his head. Jane kept an eye out for any helicopters but it would be another twelve hours before they would arrive.
"Keep an eye out for any tall buildings. Anything you could be airlifted from." John said.
"What about there?" She asked.
She pointed to high school three stories tall. It looked like it had previously been a medical evacuation site due to multiple tents sitting abandoned around the campus. There didn't seem to be any presence of infected as John looked around cautiously.
He pulled into the parking lot and slowed to a stop, shutting off the engine. He looked out at the mist settled on the ground before wrapping a cloth over his face. He helped her put the mask and oxygen tank on.
Jane opened the door and stepped out, gripping the rifle as she looked around. As John opened his, he practically rolled out, hitting the ground with a hard thud. Jane rushed to his side as he became weaker, trying to push himself to his feet. She helped him up, keeping an eye out for any infected.
"I'm fine... I..." John trailed off.
"You're not fine, John! I need you here!" She grew scared.
"I know... I... let's keep moving." He said, taking a deep breath.
The two of them left the truck and headed to the medical tents for any sign of life. Jane clicked on a flashlight before John shook his head. She turned it off and continued to search, digging through a box of files. She picked one up and opened it.

Jane continued to read before turning to John and calling out to him to come read. He was already preoccupied, digging for any information he could find. He picked up a small recorder and pressed play, listening to the message.
"Today marks five days after National Emergency was declared. Fifth of July, Twenty Twenty Two. I am the only doctor left, everyone else jumped ship when it appeared to become airborne. I have already ingested whatever is in the air, and fear I don't have long left. All I can do now is try to make the rest of our patients comfortable before whatever comes next, and document what is happening to me. There is still no known vaccine and the last statement from the White House was days ago before everything went dark. Currently I am running a fever of one hundred and five degrees Fahrenheit and vomiting blood about every hour or so. (Infected Screeching howling in the background). Shit- shit! I– I gotta go. If you find this, I hope it helps. Godspeed." The transmission cut off.
