🎶 Paris — The Chainsmokers 🎶

Val and I woke up early the next morning. We stayed a bit in bed, checking our phones and then talking about our plans for the next few days. We had not booked any flights or hotels, we just wanted to go with the flow and be open to staying longer in places we liked or leaving earlier if we were left disappointed.

Eventually, we decided to get breakfast at a Parisian café down the road and then started with exploring the Louvre and afterwards climbing the Eiffel Tower for sunset. The next two days were also filled with sightseeing: walks along the Champs-Elysées, visiting the Notre Dame Cathedral (unfortunately only from the outside) and the Île de la Cité, crossing the Seine on Pont Neuf and strolling through Le Marais.

We were currently sitting at lunch, a bit exhausted from our walk through Montmartre when Val's phone started ringing. She searched her bag for it and when she finally found it she looked at me in horror.
"Who is it?" I asked her.
She did not answer, instead she turned her phone to me.

Incoming Call...
Christian Green

"Pick up!" I urged Val.
"But... but... but why is he calling me now? We said it was a one-time thing!! Do you think I'm pregnant?" she blabbered nervously.
Extremely confused by her thinking I answered: "What the heck, Val? Why would he call you if you were pregnant, which by the way you are not, you just went to buy tampons because you got your period yesterday. And now pick up!!"
She collected all her courage and picked up.

"Hi Christian, I didn't think I'd hear from you again!" she chirped and I face-palmed myself. Great start Val, what a charm you are.
"You are where doing what sorry?" she asked confusedly. I tried to make out what Christian was saying from her answers but I wasn't understanding anything.
"Oh, wow, that's nice of you to think of us and having remembered! I'll ask her and get back to you in a few!" she replied all giddy and in a very flirty tone. She then said goodbye and hung up again.

"You and I are going to the Formula 1 race in Austria this weekend!" she announced. My brain tried to work out what she just said but my puzzled expression must have told her to give me more explanation.
"Christian just called - by the way, you were right, he did not call to tell me I am pregnant - his brother apparently works in F1 as part of the management... or something, his boss seems to be  someone important, and he has invited Christian to the race in Austria this weekend and offered him extra tickets in case he wanted to bring along friends. Christian remembered that we were traveling this summer and asked if we wanted to come along!" she explained.

I slowly started to understand.
"But Val, I've never really followed Formula 1, I'll have absolutely no clue there... Do you know anything about the sport?" I whined.
"No, but I do know two things: Christian will be there and I like him and secondly, there are lots of rich, good-looking people flocking around there, you could get lucky!" she replied while winking at me.
"Ha ha, very funny" I groaned sarcastically. "Fine... I'll do it for you if you like him that much and want to go" I huffed.

We landed in Vienna, Austria on Thursday morning. Val and I had decided to fly out a day early so we could visit a bit of the city before Christian would pick us up with his rental car on Friday to drive off to where the race was taking place.

Not many of our friends had been there so we had to rely on the internet for finding restaurants and sightseeing attractions. We took a stroll in the Inner City, went to visit Schönbrunn Castle and St Stephen's Cathedral. I felt like I was living in a historical movie while I heard the horses' hoof sounds clacking on the streets while pulling a carriage, this city had something magical in it.

On Friday morning, Val and I, yet again, closed our suitcases and after a rich breakfast we waited for Christian to pick us up with his rental car.
"Thank God we have a two-hour car ride ahead of us. I ate so much I can't move at all"y best friend complained. "You can sit in the front and talk with Christian, maybe he can teach you something about Formula 1 before we arrive. I will sit in the back and take a nap." she continued while suppressing a yawn.
I could not believe my ears. "But we have literally just woken up!"
"Ah yes, but you see, I need my beauty sleep for the weekend ahead with Christian." she replied, winking at me and patting my shoulder.

Christian arrived a few minutes later and greeted us friendly. After putting our suitcases in the trunk, we were heading off to the Styrian village of Spielberg, where the racetrack was located (as Christian explained to me). The car ride was amazing, we drove out of the city straight to a highway surrounded left and right by green hills with forests. The closer we came to our arrival location, the more beautiful it got.

Christian and I ended up not talking much about Formula 1 but instead we both talked about our passion for tennis and how he was planning to go to Wimbledon next weekend. The whole ride, discussed for the whole ride about who was the real GOAT: Federer, Nadal or Djokovic. I realised that I did not know Christian as well as I thought and mentally noted that he indeed would be a good match for Val.

We eventually arrived at a pretty, but small hotel, which apparently wasn't the one where all the race drivers were staying though. Christian was gutted, but his brother Daniel said that the other one had already been booked out two years in advance.

Val and I were sharing a room while Christian had his one just down the corridor. After fraying up a bit, we z decided to have dinner at a traditional local restaurant where we had a great evening and surprisingly, I didn't feel like a third wheel at all. It felt just like a regular night out like we had at Oxford, the difference being that we didn't have to attend boring lectures the next day, but were going to arguably one of the most high-profile sporting events at the moment.
