POV: Amelia

"Amelia and Lilian Carlyle," the social worker spoke.

"Yes." We said in unison.

"This is your last chance girls. Where is your mother?" She asked.

We faced each other as we talked to each other by the eyes. It was instinct to lie, to use the same old excuses.

To the teachers, "She just works late, Mrs. Jane."

To the landlord, "She had a meeting,"

To my friends, "She's sick,"

But in reality, we had no idea where our mother was. She was just..

"Gone." I spoke.

"You'll be sent to live with your uncle and aunt in North Carolina. They've volunteered to take you two in. Police will bring you to your house to collect your things, but that's all you may do."

She made us sign paperwork, and then, we were done.

2 days before, Lili and I were just fine. We paid rent on time, had enough food for the both of us, kept our grades well, and if it weren't for our nosey neighbors, I would've turned 18 in just 6 months, and we would've been fine. Now, I stood outside of the big house my aunt and uncle owned, in the big, gated neighborhood.

I brought my hand up to the necklace around my neck and traced the familiar pattern of my heart locket.

"We'll be fine." I whispered. "Just fine.."
