POV: Amelia

*~*

"Welcome home girls." Uncle James spoke to us. His hair was brunette, freckled with gray, and he was dressed in a plain black t-shirt and jeans. He was a very casual man for such a rich one.

The house was huge, yet looked so modern inside. It felt so cozy to be inside. "Your rooms are right across the hall from each other if you want to settle in, or you can wait, whatever you two want," he smiled brightly at us. I smiled back, because I knew that's what he wanted.

Our happiness.

But inside, I wanted to do anything but smile. I wanted to cry, and scream, and throw things, and run outside into the forest and never stop until I reached the end of the Earth. But I couldn't. And I wouldn't, for Lilian.  I nodded my head, signaling for Lili to follow me. We walked slowly up the stairs, taking in everything. We'd never been able to afford to visit uncle, even though he'd always offer to fly us out, mother refused to take his money.

She refused to take anyone's money. She refused to accept help, and that's why she would cried in her room every night for hours at a time, talking to herself, saying she couldn't take it anymore. But every morning, she would still be there, until she wasn't.

She left us, without any money, knowing rent was near due. She left us for dead, but she knew we'd make it, because that's how she raised us. To always be in survival mode.

And that's how we're wired now. No-one actually wants to help us, and if we allow help, we'll always be in debt. And there is nothing my mother hated more than being in debt to someone.

¨Itś beautiful,¨ Lili whispered to herself when she saw her room. She cupped her hand to her face, and let a single tear fall. I hugged her tightly, and we stood there. There were child-hood photos of us in the hallways of the large home.

¨They never forgot about us Amelia..never.¨ She said.

¨I know,¨ I sighed. ¨I know.¨

After, I went to my own room. It was perfect, all things that I liked were inside. An electric guitar sat by the closet door. I opened it, but the closet was empty, exempt a note.

We'll go shopping soon , lots of love - aunt jenna

I stared down at her cursive writing, unsure how to react.

We have to go to a whole new school, meet whole new people, be in a whole new environment, and suddenly have all this money, but so what? We'd get used to it..right? If we didn't, I would be 18 in April, and we could leave. A knock on the doorway entered my ears. I turned to see Aunt Jenna standing there with a large smile on her face. Her arms opened and i stepped into them.

¨How are my favorite girls! Oh I haven't seen you since you were in diapers, I have missed you so muchh!¨ She yelled, as she embraced me.

She stepped back, her hands on my shoulders looking at me.

¨Tomorrow, us girls will go school shopping. You start on Monday,¨

It was already Saturday.

Two more days until they're lives have officially shifted completely..

Some part of me wished that me and Lili could just go back home, but I knew this is what she needed, a stable home with a stable income and people who would be there for her. So I'd just learn to live with this.
