Beneath the Shimmering Waves Chapter 2
The ship followed the giant mer-mosasaur as she led the way to the village. Now and then, there would be some small icebergs blocking the ship. But Arnaaluk would dive underwater and burst through the ice, breaking them into smaller pieces. The children peered over the starboard bow and watched the marine giant swimming ahead of the boat.
Emily walked over to them and gazed at Arnaaluk, she couldn't help but notice a small bulge in the Tannin's stomach. She thought back to that giant wolf attack and remembered Arnaaluk breaching through the ice and dragging the giant wolf into the frigid depths. Did she eat that wolf creature? She said that she's part mosasaur.
Emily looked towards Michael and Grace and went over to them. "Hey kids, so do you like dinosaurs?" She asked. Both the children looked at her and nodded. "Yeah! Dinosaurs are cool!" Grace answered with a smile. "Great! So what can you two tell me about the Mosasaurus?" Emily asked, trying to keep her face straight. She didn't want to frighten the children.
Mike and Grace looked at each other and began to speak. "Well... Mosasaurs aren't dinosaurs, they're marine reptiles closely related to lizards and snakes. They were the T-rex of the deep during the Cretaceous." Suddenly, Emily's face scrunches up and she begins blinking rapidly. "Really?" She asked.
"Yeah, they were the top predators of the ocean and are everything, sharks, squids, fish, dinosaurs, and other marine reptiles!" Grace said with glee. Emily's face paled, she quickly looked up at Arnaaluk and held the railing as she confirmed her suspicion. Arnaaluk did eat that wolf creature! She thought.
"Are you okay, Maam?" Emily snapped out of her thoughts and turned to the children, both of them were looking at her with concern. Emily breathed deeply and exhaled. "I'm fine. Thank you. I better get back to work. Goodbye children."
"Bye!" They said as they turned back to the waves. Emily smiled at their childhood curiosity and headed for the bridge.
[On the Bridge]
Captain Aalto steered the boat after the giant mer-mosasaur. Like Emily, he had his concerns about whether he should trust Arnaaluk or not. He wasn't just thinking about himself, he was thinking about the safety of his passengers. He already regretted the loss of the ones who fled into the woods, he was determined to not lose any more passengers.
Suddenly, Emily walked into the bridge and sat down by the sonar system. She sighed and began tapping on it and peering at various graphs. "Everything alright with the passengers?" The captain asked.
"Yeah, they're fine." She replied, still studying the sonar. Then she sighed and asked the question he was wondering. "Do you think that we can trust her? Arnaaluk did mention other giants that would be more than happy to eat us." Emily said nervously, still checking on the console.
Captain Aalto thought about it. He shook his head and replied. "I don't know... For now, let's stay the course. I mean, it's not like we have anything that can hurt her on board. Maybe a flare gun, but I think that might anger her. We'll just have to keep an eye on her." Emily nodded and resumed her work.
Suddenly, the sonar binged loudly as another large object appeared on the screen. Both humans looked towards Arnaaluk and saw that she was still swimming ahead, they looked at the screen again and saw that the new object was 600 ft long and alongside their boat. They returned their gaze to Arnaaluk, but Arnaaluk didn't seem fazed by the new arrival.
[Beneath the waves]
Arnaaluk continued swimming. She continued to smell the new arrival and wasn't bothered. She could tell that the new arrival was no threat to her or the humans above. "Those humans are in for a big surprise.' She thought as she watched the new arrival breach the surface.
