New PeopleWhen we arrive at the camp, I see at least ten other people sitting around a fire. The truck stops, and Rick, T-dog, and Daryl get out with bags full of cans, bottles, and boxes. Presumably food, water, and first aid supplies. Glenn shimmies his way over to the end of the truck bed, and puts down the latch.
"I'll hold your bag if you'd like." He says.
I hand him my backpack, and push my way out of the truck bed. I walk closely behind Rick, Daryl, and Glenn, feeling a bit intimidated by the amount of people.
"How'd the run go?" A tall, thin woman with dark hair asked Rick.
"Not well, no sign of Merle.." Rick pauses as Daryl walks off. "We got some food and first aid supplies though. We also uh- we brought someone back with us."
People begin talking to each other as T, Rick, and Glenn split away from me. I feel their eyes land on me, and start to feel nervous.
"Rick. We talked about this." A more muscular man said sharply.
"She's harmless Shane." Rick said.
Shane's eyes traveled up and down me, and the rest of the groups did too. I began to feel uncomfortable. My shorts had holes everywhere in them, and my top did too.
He stared at my face for a moment, almost like he was judging me.
"What's your name?" He asked.
"Jamie." I mumble.
"Odd for someone like you to have a name like that."
"Shane." Rick says, firmly.
"Why? Because of my ethnicity?"
I hear him chuckle a bit before he walks away and takes his place by the fire again. The tall woman rolls her eyes at him, and walks toward me.
"I'm Lori, it's nice to meet you Jamie. Why don't you come with me. I can get you cleaned up a bit, and we can get you some new clothes."
Why was she being so nice to me? She didn't even know me yet.
"Yes. I'd like that."
She leads me down a hill behind the main camp and sits me down by a lake. She grabs a bucket and towel. The water looks crystal clear. She takes my arm and uses her hands to wash it off. She rinses my other arm and gives me some privacy to wash my back, stomach and legs. I redo the two simple braids I had my hair in and wrap myself in the towel. She comes back a couple of minutes later with folded clothes.
"Carol gave me these, she said she'd like you to have them."
She turns around, and I put them on.
She gave me a pair of loose jeans, a gray tank top, and a black jacket that what was obviously in mens sizing because it engulfed me. The tank top fits perfect, and the jeans fit fine once I put my belt on.
"Carol and I thought you'd be cold. I know the jacket is big but it'll keep you nice and warm. There's a smaller one if you want it, but this one's warmer."
"Thank you so much. I- This is too much." I say in a whisper.
"Of course, sweetie. Wanna head back up? Everyone's at the fire, if you'd like to join."
I nod my head and pick up my bow and backpack.
She leads me back to the group, and they were exactly where they were before we left. I see an open spot on a log, and take it.
"Jamie, this is Lori, Carl, Shane, Andrea, Amy, Dale, Jim, Carol, Sophia, and Jacqui. It's a lot of names, but you'll get it eventually." Rick said with a laugh.
"It's nice to meet you all. Thank you guys, for taking me in." I say, fighting my fear to speak.
"We're glad to have you." Carol says with a smile.
A moment of silence passes while we all enjoy the fire, before Shane speaks up.
"Rick said you've been alone two months. Is that true? Girl like you been on her own that long?"
"Yeah, I've been on my own two months, give or take a week or so."
"Who were you with before? A group?"
I swallow hard.
"I uh- I was staying with another woman. In a cabin."
I feel everyone's eyes burn holes in me after I finish that sentence. They we're probably wondering if I had killed her or something like that.
"So why are ya' here alone?" He asks.
I don't know why he's so interested in this.
I open my mouth to speak, but the words won't seem to come out.
"We can talk about this another time, if you'd like." someone behind me said, cautiously placing a hand on my back. It was Glenn.
"No. Uhm. Well.. She got bit. I was out hunting, She was scavenging for berries, and nuts. Stuff like that. I didn't know until I got back when- uh. when.."
"I get it. You don't have to finish." Shane says, a little bluntly.
I push back my tears, and try to avoid the gaze of the people around me. This whole situation is making me extremely nervous. I feel my eyes fill to the brim with water, and pray that no one noticed it.
"I think we should get going to bed guys. It's late. Walkers could come out." Glenn said, giving me a slight side glance.
Shane put the fire out, and people started heading into their campers. I didn't know where to go, so I sat where I was.
"There's a bunk in my trailer, I sleep on the bottom one. You can take the top if you'd like? No pressure, just wanted to ask."
Once again, something that means more to me than these people are able to understand.
"Yeah. Thank you, Glenn." I whisper
