Harper seemed surprised when I opened the door. Maybe she was expecting Jake. But I wanted to make sure I was the one to greet her and Bella. I was worried she didn't like me and I don't know... I guess I thought being helpful and taking her coat would help. But she looked kind of confused almost, and didn't really say much. She immediately ran to Jake and hugged him. Makes sense I guess.

The crowd of us all gathered in the kitchen to chat and eat the snacks Embry had prepared. And by that I mean he ordered pizza. I didn't notice right when she got there, but I noticed after a while that Harper looked really nice. She wore a navy blue velvet dress with short puffy sleeves. The same color I wore. It wasn't completely fitted, but it laid over her hips in a way that you could still see her curves. And she had sheer black tights on. I don't know why but I thought it was cute that you could see her knees through them, but then quickly realized that was a weird thought, especially to have about my brother's girlfriend.

Later on in the night I noticed Harper was sitting by herself on the end of Embry's massive sectional sofa. The opposite end of Jake and her sister. So I thought I'd strike up a conversation.

"Hey," I said as I sat down next to her. Yeah that's the farthest ahead I had thought. I had nothing else to say.

"Hey," she replied. I guess she didn't have much to say either.

"Uh... it's almost midnight" I stated, gesturing to the TV where the Times Square Ball Drop show was playing. They were showing some performance of a singer I didn't recognize. There was still about an hour until the new year.

"Oh wow, I didn't even realize it was this late."

"Yeah... Hey I'm gonna go get another beer. Do you want one?" I thought maybe that would get the conversation flowing.

"Sure, why not," she answered with a small laugh. Then I remembered she hadn't had any yet. I thought maybe she wasn't planning on drinking and now she felt pressured, which made me regret asking. But I didn't want to question her, so I decided to take her answer at face value.

"Okay I'll be right back." I walked to the kitchen and pulled two bottles out from the fridge. On my way back I noticed she had been watching me expectantly, and she didn't turn away when I met her gaze. Instead she smiled. Okay maybe she didn't dislike me. I sat down and placed one of the bottles on the coffee table in front of me. Then I twisted the cap off the other and handed it to her. She smiled again.

"Such a gentleman," she joked. But then her smile left. "I mean... I don't know why I said that, you're not a dude," she laughed nervously and ran her hand through her hair. That made me laugh.

"Don't worry, it was funny," I assured her with a smirk. Honestly that was kind of the vibe I was going for with girls anyways. A "gentleman" but softer, without all the macho-ness. Opening doors for them, while also being the little spoon sometimes. I had always considered myself a "butch", so it was nice to hear someone confirm that's how I looked from an outside perspective. Especially from another girl. She looked down at the bottle and took a sip. Then her eyes widened like she was surprised.
