The end of the world

We drove for what felt like nothingness hours.
My heart ; was empty, shattered.

The curiosity of my father resting easy was stuck on my mind, making sure to not let me forget it.

I didn't have time to be intimidated by the unknown that was declining upon us, I didn't care what happened to me.

My tears began fading away as I felt the bottomless pit of emotionless suffering. Meanwhile, Shane was concentrated on the road, focused on getting us as far away from the City as achievable.

That was until the aggressive sigh of distress flees Shane's still mouth. I didn't comprehend why until I lifted my face, resting my eyes on the overcrowded packed interstate.

Three aligned rows of cars overflowed into one lane, we were entirely blocked in. Shane parks my mother's car behind the middle row of cars, needing to get out and inquire of questions.

My mother forced me out of my seat to step out into the outside exterior. It made me timid, tensing up on the inside.

After an hour of leaning up against my mother's worn-out car, I attend to my mother calling me over to the car parked next to us.

There stood a woman in her mid-20s and her husband who looked to be relatively older. They had a younger girl with them, their daughter. She looked to be closer to Carl's age but a bit older.

As I step in my mother's direction she drags me close to her, before introducing me to unfamiliar strangers.

Quickly I learned their names, Carol, Ed and their daughter Sophia. They made companions with a few others parked around us, they looked like they maintained a plan.

I and Carl sat on the hood of my mother's car waiting for Shane to notify us what we were required to do. But he, himself looked downright petrified.

Shane was still asking around for solutions when a blonde girl approached him, she wasn't too pleased about what was occurring.

"You think any of us know what's happening? You think we'd still, be sat here if we did?"
She sassily says.

I comprehended she was frightened but for some reason, she slightly irritated me. Making her issues somebody else's problem was a tremendous deal breaker in my books.

An older man stepped ahead before pushing the blonde woman behind him, he appeared to be the one to soothe her.

"I'm Dale, I'm sorry for her."
The the old man said before letting out his hand.

Shane maintained eye contact with him while hesitating for a moment to reconsider something.

"Shane. I'm just trying to get my family out of this mess, Dale."
Shane confesses to Dale.

My eyes roll back into my head when he referenced us as his family. It delivers a completely different meaning when my father doesn't play a role in that family.

"Well, Shane. I'm thinking about going to the top of the mountains with a few others, I think it'll be safe up there. You're welcome to follow along."
Dale invites Shane.

Shane provides Dale with a nod and a satisfied smile, he felt safer now that he had a place to go. With people, even though he didn't know them personally.

My mentality was the complete opposite of Shane's, not only must I spend every moment of my day with Shane but now with random outsiders as well.

The area around us went silent for a minute provoking us to ponder why. Then the eerie sound of helicopters began flying over the top of us, civilians.

I questioned for a moment if it was going to be for help and I could tell a lot of others did too.

My mother signalled to me to keep an eye on Carl while she and Shane followed the helicopter closer. I watched them slip into the opaque woods while they monitored above.

My attention faded back to Carl, wondering what his little mind was thinking about. Perhaps if he could go home and play with his legos or maybe he could enjoy a chocolate pudding cup.

I observed as his shiny prominent brown eyes watched up at me with his mischievous smile. I smile back at him before grabbing my bag, supplied with numerous items.

My bag rattled around as I dug through it to be able to locate a chocolate pudding cup I was saving for Carl.

I remove it from my bag while Carl's eyes follow its every move. His eyes expanded wider as he grew intolerant of me taunting him with the pudding cup.

"Give me it!"
Carl orders as he holds out his hand.

I giggle before passing it over to his eager hand. I pull him closer to my chest while he devours the pudding cup. I presumed at the moment that he may have needed my reassurance to feel secure, but in actuality, it was merely for me.

I recall the helicopters above when my ears pick up on them again, observing them halt above the City.

The City that scarred me but provided me with comfort at the same time, it was the only home that I had ever known.

I knew right then and there what had been happening, what they we're going to do in the next few short seconds.

I observed as they dropped napalm directly into the streets of neighbourhoods. They were getting rid of anything and everything.

My heart dropped to my stomach as I watched it happen, sensing that all hope had simply been lost.

This was the end of the world.
The end of everything.

 The end of everything
