There's a reason that Military SF is the first on our list of sub-genre definitions. It is arguably the most popular, epic, diverse and fantastically awesome sub-genre there is. It's certainly my own personal favourite, too, but that's really not the point.
Quite possibly the most widespread of all the sub-genres, Military Science Fiction often appears combined with a whole host of other such sub-genres - DieselPunk in the movie, 'The Mutant Chronicles,' and DecoPunk in the movie, 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow,' to name but two.
For me though, there are a couple of stand-out occasions where Military SF has come to the fore on the screen, be it big or small.
Battlestar Galactica.
Starship Troopers.
For me, those two examples epitomise exactly what Military Science Fiction is all about. Honour, duty, loyalty, and kicking the crap out of the bad guys. Sure, there's more to it than that, and there's most definitely more to BSG - Six, anyone? - and Starship Troopers but let's be honest, those are the bits we love.
'Course, Military Sci-Fi can be found in books, too! *gasp* In fact many of you will be aware that Starship Troopers mentioned above was a book long before it made it onto the big screen! It's Jack Campbell's 'The Lost Fleet,' series, that does it for me though! I highly recommend that all of you, if you've not already done so, check it out!
So buckle up, 'troopers. Board your starship and grab your BFG (if you need that particular acronym explained then I'm sure we can oblige) and give a big Ooooooooooraaaaaaaaaaahhh!
This is Military SF, 'troopers!
C'mon you apes! You wanna' live forever?!
