Welcome to the Flabbergasting Flash-Fic SmackDown!

Surprise Punk is not a sub genre per se, but rather a way to describe a certain type of story breaking with traditional tropes. It can be set at any point in history, the future, or a hitherto undiscovered dimension, and Surprise Punk stories will overlap with other sub-genres. Their key element is, surprise-surprise, surprise. From the Neanderthal who invents electricity instead of fire, the scientist who, rather than creating a new soft drink comes up with a formula for faster-than-light travel, or the girl who finds out her math teacher is an alien, everything goes - and more.

The opposite of SolarPunk, LunarPunk brings us the secrets of the night under the light of the moon. Rooted in pagan mysticism and the occult, LunarPunk shows us the darker side of what might have been and of worlds beyond our imagination. Think we're lunatics? You might be right.

BioPunk focuses on biotechnology -- technology that alters the genetics of an organism. Broadly, this can even refer to selective breeding, but for the purposes of BioPunk fiction, it tends to refer to things like bioengineering, or biomods, which are programmed to enhance or alter the abilities of an individual.

With MergePunk we return to a TK favourite - first covered in one of our trademarked SmackDown challenges, then appearing in an anthology we co-ran with an Ambassador-run Wattpad profile, MergePunk is all about merging one Punk subgenre with a non-Punk subgenre. Or several of them CatPunk meets First Contact? Time Travel x DreamPunk? AncientPunk and Superhuman SF? The possibilities are endless!

TK's waterbound this month! It's OceanPunk!

It is a time of great unrest in the M'Verse. Warring factions are spread throughout the galaxies. Planets crumble after a series of seemingly random mass invasions from universes abroad. The dark science threatens to poison the minds of all who dare to seek it out. But yet there is hope. Hope lies in the hands of a ragtag crew of explorers, and their trusty generation ship, the Ooorah Mothership. Hope lies with the Mothertrooper...

Cli-fi or climate sci-fi centres on the reasons and outcome of climate change here on old Earth as well as potential means to prevent the worst. As such, cli-fi often has a darker tone, but who said that there can't be an upside to it? And of course, climate change can happen on other planets as well - and perhaps even be seen as something good by some? A large new subgenre to explore for the writers of the mothership!

Picture this: We live on the outside of a planet with a secret interior world containing countless lost civilizations. Or maybe planets as we know it don't exist... we've got the whole idea inside out! The deeper you go, the further out into space you get! Anything's possible with the Hollow Earth!

MegaCorp Sci-Fi explores scenarios where huge companies rule not only worlds and star systems, but galaxies. And while an elite profits from their unlimited influence and wealth, some fight for their independence and bare survival. Rebels, desperate underdogs, exploited droids... but the companies fight back. Or don't care a damn, since they own everything, including their employees, their kids, cats, and dreams. Welcome to the MegaCorp-Verse!
