Chapter 5

Vanessa's POV

I hastily made my way up the steps to the throne where he sat. My sisters bent down on one knee and bowed their heads in reverence. 

"Come." His voice bounced off the walls of the old, dilapidated temple. 

I obediently walked forward, my head still bowed. His shoes came into my field of vision before I felt his fingers softly tilt my chin up to meet his eyes. 

"You have found her. The Dragon Reborn." 

"Yes master."

"Well done my darling."

His praise filled me with joy. I looked into his eyes that held a soft look just for me and me alone. 

"You've seen your sisters...Moiraine..Alanna..Liandrin." He spoke. 

I didn't want to respond because I wished no harm upon them. The Dark One seemed to read my mind as he tutted softly and patted my cheek. 

"I mean no harm to them darling. I was simply asking." He reassured me. 

I nodded understandingly but still felt a sense of deceit behind his words. 

"Please master. She's just a child...a new sorceress." I pleaded on behalf of Athena. 

"Peace Vanessa. I do not want to harm Athena. All this death is not something I desire. I would've liked to avoid it. The only thing I want is for Athena to join our side." 

"The Aes Sedai have her. They will not part with her so easily." I followed my master who walked to the balcony overlooking his kingdom. 

"They will if it's on her own volition." He said, resting his arms on the balcony railing. 

"Even then. She will at least have an escort, most likely Moiraine." I added. 

"Then I will personally see to this issue myself." He responded. 

"You won't hurt her, right?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. 

"I will do what I must." He says softly, avoiding my eyes. 

"You promised me none of my sisters would get hurt." I threw my arm to my side angrily. 

"Sometimes, little one, promises must be broken for the greater good." He says. 

I scoffed, "That's rich coming from someone like you." 

"Maybe so. I will reach my end goal, no matter what it takes." He turns towards me looking into my eyes. 

"If that's the case then I want no part of it." I backed away from him. 

"Vanessa-" He reached towards me but I avoided his grasp, "No, you can finish the mission without me." I turned away from him and walked down the stairs and out the door. 

"Girls." I heard him call and looked behind me to see my group members following me. They gave me smiles and nods as praise and joy filled me knowing my Black Ajah sisters were behind me all the way. 

Together, we left his kingdom and entered the world once more. The sun shone brightly in the sky causing us to shield our eyes.

"Now what?" One of the girls asked. 

"The Aes Sedai won't take us back in. We betrayed them in their eyes." Another spoke. 

"We protect the Dragon Reborn. The Dark One will do anything to get his hands on her and we must stop him." I spoke confidently. 

I whistled loudly and sure enough our horses came running. We all hopped on and took off through the forest to the tower. 

"We'll camp close enough to the tower where we can keep an eye on Athena and where the Aes Sedai won't find us." I said.
