"Don't you think I know that?!" Joyce snaps, her voice breaking.
You, Steve, Jonathan, and Joyce are now gathered in the kitchen. Hopper had returned to the police station, promising to call if he found any leads.
Joyce has been dialing your father (if you could give him that title), nonstop for the past twenty minutes. She's standing at the phone, the coiled wire knotted around her fingers as she tugs and twists it again and again.
The rest of you are sitting around the kitchen table, watching.
"Hop told me that this is what I can do, so ─" there's a pause before, "GOD DAMMIT, LONNIE!" She screams, banging the phone back on its hook with each syllable.
Steve jumps at the sudden noise.
You get up from your seat, going over to where Joyce is standing.
Jonathan looks away, arms crossed and brow knit.
"Goddamn answering machine again..." Joyce rests her forehead against the wall, fists dangling at her sides, still clinging to the phone.
"Mom..." you address her in a soothing tone, lifting the phone from her grip. "He's not gonna pick up. He never picks up. I mean, who knows if this is even still his number ─"
"Hop said that ─" Joyce repeats, yanking the phone back from you. "Th-That this is what I can do, so... Damn it, if this is all I can do then I will, I will do this. I will call this number all day and night if I have to."
Jonathan abruptly stands, almost knocking over his chair. He then storms out of the room without a word, and his bedroom door slams a moment later.
Steve watches him go, fingers tapping on the wood surface as though he's considering whether he should follow.
"No, Steve ─" you start objecting, but he's already up.
Joyce has returned to her doomed attempts to reach Lonnie and is no longer paying attention to either of you.
"I should ─" Steve gestures towards Jonathan's room, staring at the closed door before sighing and placing his hands on his hips. "I don't know, shouldn't I?" he stares back at you. His brown eyes are wide and pleading, searching your face.
