After what felt like the most refreshing nap I had ever taken, I gently rubbed my eyes with my fists balled up and peered out of the window at the trees waving their leaves at us as we drove by.
I looked back toward the front of the Jeep as I heard my dad begin to ask, "Recognize where we are?"
"Aren't we about to pass the Miller's house?" I asked with moderate confidence, but not full certainty as we drove by a beautiful, ivory colored brick house with a marble pillared arch way to the front door. The Miller's were a lovely family whom had been close friends with my grandparents before their passing.
"Bingo! Which means we're about to turn onto Lovely Lane!" He exclaimed with an exaggerated, but humorous excitement. "It's going to be us, your uncle Ashton, and last but not least— Your aunt Maya."
Dad had always had a great relationship with his siblings, Ashton and Maya, and their parents, my grandma and grandpa. They were a close knit family woven together with a metal wire.
My mom glanced back at me and chimed in, "Naomi, I just want to tell you this before we get there for my own reassurance, but don't forget to be extra careful around the lake if you're out alone!"
I gave them both a cheerful head nod before directing my attention back to the scenery passing by. The woods that surrounded us as we turned onto Lovely Lane held such beautiful sights for the eye to see and houses only speckled out far and few.
After a short stare out of the window, we pulled onto the gravel driveway and made our way up to the cabin. I jumped out of the Jeep as soon as my dad put the gear shift into park. I took a deep breath and looked around me at the natural beauty that surrounded.
"You didn't want to give me a hug?" I heard my uncle Ashton say as his arms wrapped around from behind me. He picked me up off the ground and squeezed me lightly while swaying back and forth.
"You're going to make me sick!" I chuckled as he put me back down onto the ground again.
I walked over to my aunt Maya and hugged her while making light conversation of how much we missed each other and how she thinks my hair is so gorgeous since I dyed it a dark blonde. After the brief chat, I grabbed my suitcase from the back of the open trunk and made my way through the front door of the house.
"It's lovely to be back!" I screamed to the top of my lungs as I stood at the entrance, quickly turning around to shout out the door, "Sorry if I busted anyones ear drums!"
Laughter and cheerful conversation come from outside. I shut the front door behind me and walked through the house to my bedroom, reminiscing on the memories that this home built of cobblestone and wood had provided. Chandeliers with fine white crystals dangling from beneath them graced the ceilings. Beautiful accents of shiny marble and granite were adorned throughout with sunlight from the many large windows lining the walls gleaming in. It was quite a large home and held seventeen individual rooms in total.
I sat my suitcase to the side of my bedroom near the closet and pulled my phone out of my back pocket to text my best friend, Kamari, to let her know we had made it to the cabin safely. Kamari was definitely the mom friend who tried to always be there for everyone and worried about all her friends, maybe a little too much. As I pressed send on the text, a loud muffled noise come from outside. It sounded like a car door shutting, but a touch louder.
I laughed a bit after figuring it was probably my dad chopping fire wood or something of the sort and started my way over to my bedroom window. As I walked over to the window to peak outside, there was another booming noise and shrieking screams from outside...
