Mathew Cunningham isn't very popular. He's looked at as a nerd for his intelligence, and will get his fair share of rude comments, or even the occasional beating from his fellow students.
Since middle school, Matt had a crush on Nancy Wheeler, but who didn't? She was pretty, smart, and was easily as shy as him. Unfortunately, Steve Harrington had recently become aware of her existence, and didn't want to waste any time in making her his girlfriend.
Johnathon Byers had also been bullied in Hawkins for a while. That's how he and Matt became friends in 1980. But, now it's 1983, and Johnathon's little brother, Will Byers, goes missing. Johnathon is determined to find out what happened to his brother, and Matt has no issue in helping him out.
Nancy's interest is piqued when her own best friend goes missing, and she too wants to know what's going on. Nancy doesn't realize it, but she slowly begins to fall for Matt, who'd crushed on her ever since he was a kid.
