He hid a lumous lochri. Candor Nash, one of the greatest WitchHunters in all of Octaven, hid the child and lied to Hale Arsen. I sit on the roof a moment longer, having disappeared from my place next to Cozen and Hale. I had wanted to ensure Candor had backup if he needed it, but now I'm left with an impossible decision. Candor lying to Hale is a red flag. Hiding a lochri is punishable by death. Candor had just taken a huge risk. What would Hale do if he found out? Even if he did show mercy for his long time friend, Candor would never be a Hunter again. He'd be exiled.

I run a hand over my face as the woman stands, her baby wrapped once again in heavy cloth. This is my last chance. If I lose her in the crowd, she'll be gone. My duty as a resident of the guild is to turn them in. My duty as a citizen of Octaven is to report all lochri to the proper authorities. My duty as a WitchHunter-

But I'm not a WitchHunter. I'm not a citizen. I'm property. I belong to a WitchMaster, but I'm not one. Candor let them go. By revealing it, I would be damning 3 lives. I wasn't ordered to follow him. If I leave now, no one will know I saw. I close my eyes for a moment. I'm loyal to Velius. I may be his property, but he's taken care of me for 14 years. He's the closest thing I have to family. I've had a high position, a place to live, and a full belly for 14 years, all thanks to him. He's earned my loyalty.

I open my eyes, searching for the mother and her lumous child. Gone. Something akin to relief flows through me. It would be impossible for any normal person to find her now, and I'm stuck on this roof. I shrug. "Even the Ace has limits. She was just too fast." I drop down from the two story roof easily down onto the cobblestone of the alleyway. Much too fast for me. I am, after all, just a kid.
