I stared out of the kitchen window at the sky. Small white clouds quivered with tension against the pale blue sky, barely moving, as if they were waiting. The calm before the storm, I assumed. But a feeling in my gut told me that there was something more than a storm coming. I tried to shake off the odd feeling, but it lingered in my mind. "We're back," Eren exclaimed, walking into the house. Mikasa entered behind him quietly. Eren looked solemn as he put away the firewood he had collected. I abandoned the food I had been preparing for a moment to check on Eren. "Wow, you collected a lot of wood today. Did you work hard?" I asked smiling at him. "Yeah..." He said weakly. My smile grew as I tugged at his ear. "You're ears are red. That means you're lying. Did Mikasa help you?" I turned to look at Mikasa who smiled at me.
A few minutes later, the food was set on the table and everyone waited for me to finish cleaning the dishes. Grisha was packing the last few of his things into his bag and talking about his trip when Mikasa blurted out, "Eren wants to join the Scout Regiment." My heart dropped. "What?!" I shouted, dropping the dishes and running to kneel beside Eren. "Do you know how dangerous that is?!" I tried to talk sense into him, yelling that so many people had died outside of the walls. Eren was silenced when Grisha asked, "why do you want to go outside of the walls?" Eren's face hardened into determination. "Because I want to see the world I was born into! And I don't want to be trapped in this cage!" My chest tightened as he spoke. I knew how he felt. In fact, I felt the same way. I longed to see the world my mother had always spoken about, but I knew the danger. I knew that I couldn't see the world my mother knew as a child because outside of the walls were the Titans. Grisha opened the door and was about to leave when he said, "I'll show up you the secret in the basement when I get back." He then smiled and turned to leave. "Be careful," I whispered as he walked away.
A while later, Eren and Mikasa started for the door, and I felt my stomach clench. "No!" I shouted as Eren reached for the door handle. "What? We were going to see Armin." I shook my head. "I- I... I have to go to the market." I smiled nervously. "Could you please stay here until I get back? Please?" Mikasa nodded, and Eren pouted. "Thank you." I sighed as I left the house. I didn't want them walking around today. Not with this feeling of... dread? I held myself tightly as I walked through the town. "Mrs. Jeagar!" A voice called out to me. "Armin! Hello sweetie." Armin walked up to me and smiled. "Where are Eren and Mikasa?" He asked. "They're home," I explained. Armin opened his mouth to respond when the sky flashed green.
The sky filled with steam as a large, meaty hand gripped the wall. No words left my mouth as the head of a fleshless Titan emerged from behind the wall. Suddenly, it's foot came crashing through the wall, sending debris everywhere. Oh my God, I thought, lifting my hand to cover my gaping mouth. Houses were crushed by large pieces of the wall, some people flatted in the streets by boulders- "The children!" I screamed turning to run back home. "Eren! Mikasa!" I prayed that they were alright, but as I turned onto our street I saw the large rock that crushed my home. "EREN! MIKASA!" I dug through the rubble, lifting a few boards to reveal the two children- my two children. "Eren! Mikasa!"
Gently, I placed my hands on their cheeks. There was a gash on Eren's forehead, and I felt his warm blood on my hand. Mikasa's beautiful black hair was wet and sticky. "Mom." Eren sputtered. The ground shook, and I looked up to see a Titan smiling at me. "No." My voice came out a desperate plea. Hot tears ran down my face.
"Hold on Eren, Mikasa," I was frantic, trying to lift the too-heavy roof while my hands bled "I'm here. You're going to be ok! Please! Just a bit more!"
"Mom," Eren choked, mouth half filled with blood "Please run... it's *choke* too late for us *gasp* please mom..." Them Eren passed out.
At that moment, Hannes appeared.
"Mr. Hannes" Mikasa said, her voice barely above a whisper "Take Mrs. Jeager and go! Please! She'll get eaten if she stays *wheezes*." Then she turned to face me. "Mrs. Jeager, thank you for taking care of me this whole time, for giving me a home, a family. I can never repay your family enough, so please, I'm begging you! Go to the evacuation boats, stay safe, stay alive! For Eren, for your husband... for me." The titan was almost on top of us now. Then, without any warning, Hannes grabbed me by the waist and carried me away.
"NO!!" I screamed, kicking and desperately trying to get back to the children "LET ME GO HANNES! LET ME GO RIGHT NOW! EREN!! MIKASA!!" My screams ripped through my throat. Tears filled my eyes as the titan lifted the roof. Mikasa was still holding tightly to Eren's hand when the Titan took her, lifting her away from the rubble and into its mouth. The blood of my children was sprayed all over what remained of my home, right in front of my eyes...
"Eren... Mikasa..." I whispered, my outstretched hand falling limply against Hannes' back. "My babies..." I screamed, unable to do anything else. "My children, my babies... Eren and Mikasa..." I let another scream escape. "My life, my family..."
"I'm sorry," Hannes said. "I'm so sorry." His voice cracked. "I couldn't do anything... I couldn't..." I pounded my fist against his back. It was his fault! If he knew how to fight, he could have killed the Titan, he could have helped me save my children...
Hannes took me onto an evacuation boat and wrapped me in a blanket. "I'm sorry," he said agin before walking away. "W-where's Eren and Mikasa?" I flinched at their names, but turned to see Armin. "I ran to get Mr. Hannes. Are they..." He read the look on my face and became quiet. "Oh." He whispered, before his body began shaking as he cried. "Shhh," I cooed, taking him onto my lap. "M-my p-parents," Armin cried into my neck. "I'll take care of you..." I promised.
I tried to calm Armin down but ended up breaking down as well. We cried, sitting on the floor of a boat that was racing to escape death, overcome with grief.
Eren... Mikasa...
