My time at college in California ended up being a great experience. I made friends, lost friends, dated a ton and did a surprising amount of drugs for a college student. But not a day went by where I didn't think about Baji. Unfortunately all of my college ties were severed when my best girlfriend and my ex-boyfriend started dating. He and I were never in love or anything, but she was the jealous type and didn't want me hanging around our group of friends anymore, and since I was so close to graduating, it was easy for me to walk away.
I landed a fantastic job at a financial advisement firm with tons of perks. I was showered with fancy dinners, concert tickets, private club access, and trips to Vegas, but after four years of working in that industry, I was itching for a change. There is no satisfaction in making rich people richer. What, you couldn't buy the Lamborghini you wanted? Poor baby. Let me help you.
I started putting out feelers for jobs in Japan. I don't know why, but it was calling me back. I could be closer to my parents and some of my favorite friends ever, who I only got to see once or twice a year when I'd fly home. I was looking into options for a new path, something where I can help underprivileged people as opposed to the uber-privileged.
When a recruiter for a Japanese company contacts me, I jump at the chance to find out more. I interview and learn that the company helps people who are down on their luck. I was offered the job, but I can't find any information about them online. I decide to take the chance. At least if it doesn't work out, I'd be back in Japan.
Fuck I missed the energy of Tokyo. The fast-paced city is like a completely different world compared to the laid-back vibe of California. I get off the crowded train and figure out where I'm going. Once I reach my destination I just stop and look up at the gorgeous black mirrored-glass building, hoping that I made the right decision. I walk through the doors and the lobby is so very elegant. I walk to the receptionist's desk and give her my name.
"Take the elevator up to the 10th floor and they'll assist you."
The building is surprisingly empty, just a few well-dressed people here and there. My nerves start up while I'm alone in the elevator, heart racing a little. Am I not dressed fancy enough? Am I going to fit in here? I get off on the 10th floor, but not without noticing it doesn't go any higher without key card access.
The receptionist on this floor welcomes me and walks me into a private conference room. For a company that helps people, the place was surprisingly luxurious.
It's just a few minutes of dealing with my anxiety before a tall gorgeous man walks into the conference room. He kinda looks familiar.
"Hello love. It's so nice to see you again. How've you been?"
It takes me a minute because his braids are gone, his hair is lavender, and he's actually wearing a shirt, but that smile is the same...
My face lights up with recognition. "Ran! Oh my god I didn't realize you worked here!" I say, trying to maintain my composure and not run over to hug him.
"Yeah, I'm one of the executives here." He looks me up and down and gives me a half-smile before seductively saying, "Welcome to Bonten."
His hands open in invitation so I get up and jump right into his arms. He squeezes me tight and I plant a kiss on his cheek. He sets me down slowly then looks at me as he brushes a stray hair off my face. His purple eyes are smiling as I reach up to touch the new tattoo on his neck.
"So, tell me more about Bonten."
We take a seat at the conference room table, and he goes over the different things that Bonten does. Personal loans. Import/export. Small businesses like day spas and night clubs.
