Wind howls.
Floorboard creaks.
Refrigerator hums.
Silence deafens.
By the window, a thick layer of white blankets the sidewalk.
Curtains close one by one.
Away,
A church bell chimes twelve
Midnight.
She writes, trembling
In darkness
In anger
In tears
Alone:
"I know
Winter brings frostbite
And piercing cold
And blizzards bring whiteouts
And ice
But you are colder than snow
Your heart a permafrost
Eternal darkness
As the insensible Sun avoids the Arctic
So envelopes your miserable soul
For now and forever
You have chilled my senses
And frozen my hopes
Of ever loving you again
Happy New Year."———
