James and Akeira grew up with a loving mother. James never knew his father. Before leaving for Camp Half-Blood the twins mother died in a car accident. James was with his mother returning from the grocery store when a drunk driver hit them and killed his mother on impact but left him unharmed. James was traumatized and has nightmares about the same thing happening to Akeira. When Akeira was told she didn't have time to process what happened before her best friend who James vaguely knew was bringing them both to Camp Half-Blood.
