It had been almost two years since I was in remission from my emophilia and I had been leading a happy and uncomplicated life. I realized it was much easier to be single with a non-existing love life than to undergo the mayhem and agony of relationships and breakups.
I witnessed my best friend Zoey go through all her breakups and it wasn't something a person who care about their wellbeing would want to experience. I watched her as she wept and crumbled with pain after she lost someone once dear to her.
I saw her many times end relationships with guys claiming she no longer felt the vibe going on. She took no heed of all the insincere love declaration they made for each other and the memories they shared together.
There were also times she went berserk and became hungry for revenge when she discovered one of her ex-boyfriend was double timing her.
Those incidents were formidable enough and they made me feel contented with the way I was. I held them as an excuse to comfort myself and believe that being single wasn't actually a bad thing. Also maybe the generational curse running in my family was a blessing in disguise.
Today was Saturday, I was concealed in my room since morning working on some of my sketches. My bed was disorganized, filled with papers and pencils and I was in the midst of the chaos lost in my world. Drawing and sketching were my passion, I really enjoyed doing that and I felt more alive whenever I placed a pencil on a paper.
Since I had a free schedule today, I decided to stay in there and finish some of my pending projects. I didn't plan on going out of my room any time soon so I made sure to keep stashes of snacks that would keep me energized through out the day.
I also wasn't expecting any guests today.
The creaking sound of my room's door opening broke me from my trance. At first, I thought it was my mom coming to check on me. I was surprised to see Zoey plodded inside the room instead.
Earlier, she sent me a text message telling me about her anniversary date with her boyfriend of six months, Troy. According to what she told me, the date was supposed to last the entire day. I wondered what she was doing in my room right now, maybe the date was postponed.
As she advanced closer, I notice something was wrong with her. She walked like a weary ghost, her shoulders were slumped and her hand clutched tightly to her purse as if trying to disintegrate it into nothingness. Her face was red and mascara surrounded her misty eyes. She looked devastated.
I dropped the pencil in my hand and rushed to her. My face creased with worry as I probed at her melancholic face and asked.
"What happened?"
My question most had triggered her pain because she Instantly burst into tears, she engulfed me into a tight hug and began to sniffle on my shoulder. I hugged her back trying to console her despite not knowing what happened.
"Troy...brokeup...with...me." she blubbered the bad news and exploded into a new crying fit.
Okay. I wasn't expecting that. I thought they were still hovering in the honeymoon phase of their relationship, still being lovey-dovey and all. What went wrong?
I disentangled my hands from her back and placed them on her trembling shoulders. I looked into her eyes with solicitude and was about to start the usual it is going to be okay Speech. But what she blubbered next shut me down. The expression on my face quickly altered from concern to astonishment. My eyes widened and my jaws dropped.
"He did that to me even after I gave him that necklace yesterday. I really am stupid Sky I should have known."
The necklace she was referring to wasn't any ordinary cheap necklace, it was something that worth nearly hundred of dollars. She purchased it last week online and told me she was planning to give it to Troy as her anniversary gift for him. I thought she was goofing around. But clearly she wasn't.
