"I'm going to give you an assignment."

"Okay, what is it?" I mumble. I may physically be in the room with Lawrence but mentally... mentally I'm in his car again.

Who does he think he is? Making a move on me when I show no sign of attraction towards him whatsoever.

Lawrence is rattling off about the assignment meanwhile I'm lost in my mind.

I snap back to reality hearing the clicking from Lawrence's fingers. Of course, I'm not in one of the most amazing moods right now. I realize I've been staring at Lawrence intently with a glare on my face.

The most surprising part was that Lawrence looked a bit nervous now. Almost... intimidated? Amusement curls in my head as a smirk appears on my face. His eyes look so much prettier this way.

"Ms. Avery are you listening?" he asks in his condescending tone.

"Sorry. I wasn't. Could you repeat that again?" I rest my chin on the palm of my hand.

His eyes, returning to their original arrogant state, looking me up and down. "Tell me love, what are you thinking about?" he rests his palms on my desk.

"Tell me love," I shoot back, "why'd you make a move on me in the car?"

"Oh, are you still thinking about that?" his smile widens, to my annoyance, "Would you like to finish what we started?"

While I remain silent, smiling, resting my elbow on the table, Lawrence moves closer to me.

The audacity.

He hovers inches from my face when my smile disappears and I grip his chin, squeezing his cheeks till his lips pout.

"What you started... and I don't think I said yes, Lawrence."

Lawrence's smile falls faster than the temperature in November, but he quickly regains his composure wrapping his hand around my wrist and pulls my hand away from his chin.

"Let's focus, shall we?"

"I'll try my best, Lawrence."

His throat bobs, swallowing before he drags the chair in front of his desk and sits in front of me.

"For this assignment you need to attend a gala with me. It's a masquerade ball, but the crowd is very secretive so at midnight no one reveals their face at all."

I pick my jaw back up before responding to this ridiculous plan. "Absolutely not, especially not after that stunt you pulled this morning."

"If you do this I'll triple your pay for the next six months."

This is where I begin to consider his offer. That extra money could finally buy me oit of my debt.

But I'd be going with him.

Maybe I would have jumped at the opportunity before I realized how much of an arrogant ass Lawrence really is. But now...

Who knows what kind of crowd Lawrence hangs around.

But that money.

"When is it?" I ask him.

"Next week's Friday night." So a week from now.

"Okay," I sigh, "It's a formal dress code, right? I can dig out some of my old dresses."

"Actually, let's get you a new dress instead. It'll match the masks I'm having made."

"I can't buy a new one right now, the ones I have will be fine."

"Oh no, I'm buying the dress."

Oh.

"Alright then," I accept.

"We can go look for a dress now if you'd like," Lawrence offers.

"What? I'm still working what do you mean?"

"This is still work, Avery," he says, "You won't get in trouble for it." Lawrence rises from his seat to collect his keys and jacket. "I'm your boss anyways, you're excused," he winks. Eyeroll...

I follow, putting my phone away and taking my handbag with me. Before we head out of the door I throw my jacket on and enter the elevator, exiting on the first garage floor.

It's more crowded than the last time since it's much earlier than before.

We climb into his car and drive out of the garage in the direction away from my apartment.

"Where is this store anyways?" I ask.

"Just outside the city," he responds.

"What!" Bane Enterprises' building is at the center of the city. "That's at least an hour away."

He makes a sound in agreement.

"Will we even be back before night falls?"

"Don't worry, Avery. There are plenty of hotels we can stay in for the night."

"As if I'd stay in some sketchy motel room with the likes of you."

"You know damn well I can afford so much better than that," he flashes a dazzling smile.

Fucking hell, this is going to be a long ride.
