“ . . . and Leilani Akana,” a voice said into the mike monotonously.
Nimbly, I rushed towards the stage with my eyes cast downward. Our science group was presenting this new go–green project, and I was one of the representatives. Liam Miyagi was our main leader. Usually, everyone in the “nerd” category was ignored, but Liam was different. Everyone thought that he was cute, which he was. I had a huge crush on him since eighth grade.
Liam had straight black hair that always fell into his eyes, which were intensely dark. His large–framed glasses look like an Asian version of Harry Potter, minus the scar. He wasn’t buff or tall or jocky; Liam was just so witty and hilarious that he was the geek chic trendsetter. At my school, last names were big, so he was called Miyagi. I know it’s stupid, but hey, we’re in high school.
After our presentation, I scampered out of sight, back into the grumpy crowd of seniors. A bunch of kids mumbled and grouched at me as I bumped into them. Finally arriving at my chair, I plopped myself down, breathing with relief.
Rylee Flynn, my best friend, said, “You’re like a twitchy bunny, Lani!”
I stuck my tongue out at her. Her bright green eyes were teasing when I slapped her arm playfully. She turned to watch D.J. (Darryl Jonah Evans) walk up the stairs for his band’s upcoming concert. She’s had a major crush on him since freshman year. D.J. was a musician—he was the lead guitarist. Rylee wanted to join his little group, since she loved singing and was good at it, too.
I tugged on her curly hair lightly. “You should talk to him, already! I mean, you’re obviously in love with the guy!”
She blushed under her freckles and denied it, but I knew better. Rylee always wrapped her fingers around a lock of her thick, red hair whenever she was crushing on someone.
“You’re doing the hair thing,” I lamented plainly.
Her eyes widened and she dropped the curl. I laughed, and this time, she slapped me. My laughter started drawing attention towards me, so I clapped my hand over my mouth.
After the long assembly, Rylee and I walked towards the water fountains, where we met our friend, Conner Pryce, and his girlfriend, Bailey Pratt.
Conner was running his fingers through his messy brown hair. He was looking into Bailey’s hazel eyes. I didn’t want to ruin their little love fest, but Rylee liked a little drama.
“Hey guys, break it up! Whoa, whoa, whoa! Rated R!” she joked.
Conner stepped away from Bailey slightly, blushing furiously. His gray eyes were jumping all over the place, but I saw him touch Bailey’s back, where her long dirty blonde ponytail hung glossily, for comfort. They were adorable together.
I waved at Conner and grinned at Bailey.
Bailey smiled back shyly. She was still new to our little group. I said hi, and she whispered a hello back. Conner, however, decided to skip the introductions.
Instead, he said, “You are such a chicken. The whole time, you looked like you were ‘boutta puke! Next time, when you’re nervous, try to smile instead of make a this–is–the–end–of–the–world face!”
I stuck my tongue out at him. “You try going up there!”
He made a silly, sarcastic face at me. Bailey touched his arm and said, “C’mon, Conner, back off.”
He took her hand and said, “For you, I ‘lose’ this argument. But not with grace,” he grumbled.
Rylee laughed at the seriousness in his voice. “Okay, guess what?!”
