“C’mon, Rylee! Pick up!”
At the sixth ring, Rylee picked up. Cheerfully, she asked, “Hello?”
“Hey, it’s me! I’m going to Liam’s like right now. I asked him if I could use the bathroom so I could talk to you.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down. You’re going to Liam’s? Like Liam’s house?!”
I rolled my eyes. “Yes, his house. Where else? But, I need some tips!”
“Why me?”
I rolled my eyes again. Sometimes she was so oblivious. “Because you have the most experience. You had like five boyfriends!”
“Hey! The first one does NOT count. I was in kindergarten!”
I laughed, remembering that memory. There was a kid named Damien in our kindergarten class. He and Rylee pretended to date, which was something they both picked up from their big siblings who were going out at the time. Unfortunately, Damien moved in second grade.
“Well, whatever. You still had FOUR boyfriends!”
Rylee scoffed. “That’s not that many.”
“Well that’s four more than me, so c’mon! Spill your lover secrets! I only have approximately two point five three minutes!”
I could tell Rylee was rolling her eyes at my nerdy comment. “Okay, okay fine. Ummm, just act cool and relaxed like you do with me and Conner.”
“But we’re gonna be at his house . . . alone.” I actually fibbed a bit; I didn’t know if we were going to be there alone or not, but at this point, I was desperate for tips.
“Oh,” Rylee said loudly, as if she totally got what I said. “Well, um, if he looks at your lips, lean in. That means he wants a kiss. But don’t kiss him unless he leans in, too. You still need to act cool. Make him laugh. Guys also like talking about themselves, so ask him questions. Hmmm, yeah. That’s pretty much it. Oh wait, DON’T act clingy. That’s the worst thing to do!”
I summarized it up. “So . . . lean and kiss if he leans, talk about him, make him laugh, no clingy . . . right?”
“Yup!”
I could hear Liam’s light knocking on the door. Embarrassed, he asked, “Umm, are you . . . er, done in there, Lani?”
“Almost!”
I whispered to Rylee, “Okay, I gotta go now! Bye! Wish me luck!”
“Good luck! Have fun!”
I clasped the phone closed and checked my complexion in the mirror. After tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear, I straightened my back and walked out of there.
Liam was leaning against the wall. “Oh, okay. Ben’s waiting outside. Harrison is kinda peeved.”
I blushed. “Sorry . . . I dropped my phone in the sink.”
Liam laughed. “Of all the things . . . Haha.”
“Hey!” I protested, shoving him away playfully. “It could happen to anyone!”
