Coming from a family of a troubled past, she had grown accustomed to the fact that everyone expected her to become some sort of failure of a broken family. But it didn't make it ok. Evie acknowledged this, but it felt like privacy was just a word at this point.
Her trip to Georgia wasn't planned, nor expected by those around her. Truth be told, her mental health was declining. Her relationship with her mother was fragmented and the only person she could wholeheartedly trust was her father. He was currently filming season 4 of stranger things but nothing came in-between him and his duties as a father. David told her to come over and stay with him in Georgia, he thought a change of scenery would help in some way. She agreed but on the conditions that they don't tell her mother as she would attempt to make Evie come home and blame her father or his partner, Lily. Evie adored Lily, she was the mother she'd always longed for. Her past wasn't pretty, but her future was and that's what Evie admired about her. If only the same could be said for her biological mother.
Kate wasn't prepared to be a mother, nor the responsibility of having to care for herself. Evie was born a happy mistake, a one night stand if we're being honest. She knew and didn't care. It brought her comfort knowing she never had to experience her parents as partners. Kate wasn't a bad mum. She just wasn't mature enough. Her scandals began not long after Evie's birth and it was something that Evie still pondered about. Kate priotisted partying and having a drug fuelled night, whereas her father packed up and moved to London so he could be with his daughter. He would sacrifice so much for Evie as she grew up, he wanted her to have a stable childhood and her mother wasn't able to give her that. Kate would often blame David for the broken relationship between Evie and herself, but she was yet to realise that she had somewhat failed Evie as a mother. She missed school productions, sports days, milestones, the list goes on. But you know you didn't? David. He'd be there, no matter what. And it's sacrifices like that, that made Evie more drawn to her father when things turned south, like now.
And here they were now, David on set filming and Evie sitting in his trailer as she cried silently at the headlines circulating the media. She knew it was only a matter of time before Kate contacted her, or that her friends back home would question her. Evie had reached a breaking point. Life was so incredibly overwhelming to the point where she felt as if she was drowning beneath a pool of hardships and hate. It was hard to keep it all in.
Evie stood up from the trailer and decided to go on a walk, knowing that if she sat on her phone for much longer then she'd simply make herself ill. Leaving her dad a note, she headed out and walked towards the exit of the set. Her mind was incredibly fogged up with internal monologue, so much so that she wasn't focusing on what was in front of her. Not until she collided with someone. "Oh my goodness! I am so sorry." She exclaimed helping the stranger up from the floor. The stranger laughed and brushed off his outfit, smiling at her. "It's okay darling, I was in such a trance I wasn't looking where I was going." He grinned as he spoke, a quality that Evie found almost refreshing. It wasn't often that someone would smile whilst looking at her, she was often met with a range of sympathetic glances or glares. No in-between. "No, honestly it was my fault. I wasn't looking where I was going either, I need to go to specsavers when I get home." She joked with him. "Ah! A fellow brit, and please. Stop apologising, it's ok." He smiled. "Born and bread, and I promise I will stop apologising." She giggled, but would soon retract her statement.
A habit Evie had was to rock back andI forth on the balls of her feet, and she'd just rolled onto the mans foot. "Oh fuck! I'm sorry, are you okay?" Evie asked as she looked for signs of any hurt in the strangers features. "It's fine! I didn't feel a thing" He chuckled as he took in Evie's panicked expression. "Gosh you are something else." He continued to smile, she noticed a gleam in his eye as he smiled. "I know, hence why I stay in the trailer all day." She smiled shyly.
"What's your name stranger?" He asked, wanting to know more about the girl he'd just encountered. "Evie, Evie Harbour." She replied, sticking her hand out. "Joseph Quinn and it has been a pleasure meeting a mini David I must say." Joe winked as he shook her hand. Normally Evie would groan at anyone comparing her to her father, but this time, she was too distracted by the tingling sensation she'd felt running up her arm during the handshake. Unbeknown to Evie, Joe felt it too.
"I was about to head to catering if you fancy it?" Joseph enquired, hoping she'd say yes. Evie pondered. Her mood had improved drastically within 5 minutes of his presence. She had a critical decision to make and it was down to her to make the right one. Either wallow in self-pity, or find out more about Joseph Quinn.
"I would love that."
