𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 𝑛𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 at Cousins beach is always momentous for the Conklin and Fisher families. The teens hang out by the pool, then go to the annual summer kickoff bonfire. This year, Susannah has requested everyone stay at the house longer to watch a movie. Steven had his complaints but all of the kids have always had a hard time saying no to Susannah. It's just part of her charm.
With her head on Conrad's lap and legs on Jeremiah's, Lila was unbelievably comfortable. Susannah looks over and awes "Our kids were made for each other," She whispers to Laurel. Delila heard this and wondered, which one was I made for? She silently hopes Susannah meant Jeremiah.
Conrad taps her temple, "Hey, lay on Jere, I wanna go smoke" Lila reluctantly moves and nuzzles into Jeremiah, he smiles to himself, putting his arm around her. Butterflies erupt in Delila's stomach.
Half an hour passes and Conrad still hasn't returned. Growing concerned for her best friend, Delila gets up and heads for the backyard. Her heart sinks at the sight of Conrad. "What's wrong, Connie?" She asks, sitting down next to him, putting her feet in the pool as well.
Conrad Fisher is pretty closed up. The only person he has ever been able to open up to is Delila. Delila is a very charismatic, nonjudgmental person. Anyone who dislikes her is out of their mind. This summer, Conrad has been different. His normally easy-going, free-willed self has vanished. There are moments where he seems to be like he used to be, but then he gets this look on his face, and the chip on his shoulder returns.
"You can talk to me, ya know," She tells him, nudging his shoulder. He doesn't respond, "Conrad, please. You know I won't judge you- i..is this about Aubrey dumping you? Did she do something? I'll drive over to her house right now and-" Conrad finally interrupts her.
"And you'll do what?"
"I'll beat her ass up" Conrad chuckles
"It's not about her anyway," He looks down with a sigh
"Then who?" She pushes
"It's my-"
"Guys, the movie ended, Are you two ready to go?" Jeremiah and Steven interrupt, and Delila sighs. What was he going to tell me?
"Uh, ye...yeah we're ready," Conrad says, faking a smile, standing up, and offering a hand to Delila. She takes his hand and mumbles a thank you.
On the way to the bonfire, Jeremiah and Steven were talking the whole way there. Conrad and Delila were quiet.
"Oh my god, guys! It's the not-so-new gas station girl I was telling you about," The creep from the gas station slurs, putting his arm around Delila.
"Get off me," Delila says, barely above a whisper, memories flood through her brain. He doesn't move, "I said, get off me," Her voice raises slightly. "Get your arm off me, you prick" She moves away from him, voice more audible now, but trembling.
"I'm just trying to have some fun," the Gas station guy growls
"I...I don't want to have fun with you. Please just s-stay away" She mumbles trying to find one of the guys. "Jere?" Delila half yells
"Lila?" Conrad asks, stopping kissing some gorgeous girl, "Is everything alright?"
"Yeah, uh do you know where Jeremiah is?" She stutters
