EL'S POV
I walk into school and see my best friend max.
"MAX over here" as I wave her over.
"Hey El how are you this morning."
I get this weird feeling but I push it off has nerves because its the first day of school.
" I'm ok for the most part, you?"
I asked very quietly.
" I'm good, I get to see Lucas after all summer of not being able too."
Oh as I thought, that feeling came back but more sad. What can it be?
"Yeah I bet, must of been hard, but at least its high school now."
Yeah high school the most fun time of school I sarcastically say to myself. Max broke the silence as we head to our first class, English,
" Yep the best time to hang out with him, we have break and lunch together."
I wanna go home this feeling hurts so much but Joyce won't let me stay home.
"How's Billy and your mom since your step dad left?"
She sulks down a little when she heard that.
" It's alright I guess, Billy has been more rude but also quiet."
Oh I thought he would've been happier.
"I mean yeah his dad left him, I get why,"
I said as I felt bad for her because he's been getting physical but she won't tell anyone.
Max's POV
As El said that said that I got a little curious about why she cares for me so much, not even Lucas does.
"Yeah, you're right. I feel bad for him as well, I know how he feels." I said about to cry because my ribs hurt from this morning
....FLASHBACK.....
"Hey little shit bring me a drink." Billy yelled at me,
"I'm getting ready for school, can you do it?" I yelled back putting pants on.
Billy busts up in the room,
"I don't care, you do what I say when moms gone." He slaps me.
"now go get my drink now." Crying, I leave and get him a drink.
Once I bring it back he pushes me to the ground and kicks my ribs.
" Get ready you have 10 minutes." he angrily walks out to the car, I put my shirt on quickly and cover my bruise
....END OF FLASHBACK...
"You good max," El waves her hands.
"yeah lets get to class please."
I can't wait till 5 period, I get to see Lucas. Hopefully he doesn't have basketball practice or hellfire during that break, I want to see him.
No One's POV
As everyone is walking through the halls, Max goes to the bathroom because she starts breathing heavy and her heart beats quicker. Eleven, Mike, and Dustin notices she isn't in class and starts to worry. Just as Eleven was about to ask to leave Max walks in and they all sigh in relief.
" Max why are you late?" The teachers asks,
Max spoke," I was in the bathroom miss, I'm sorry it won't happen again."
The teacher let's her sit down with a warning. the teacher went back to her lesson, when the intercom went off.
" Will Max Mayfield please come to the office, will Max Mayfield please come down to the office.
" Max gets up and leaves, as she walks into the office she sees Billy. Max's heart starts to beat fast, "Yes Mr. Coleman?"
"Billy needs to talk to you, Y'all may step into the hallway."
Billy and Max step out of ear shot.
"Why the hell is the kitchen still dirty Max?!!" Billy whisper yells at Max.
" I thought it was your night, I am so sorry I will do it right as I get home."
Billy gets angry and slaps her again,
" I don't give a shit that it was my night, you will do it when we get home. You better be ready for a punishment when we get home, got it?"
"yes sir,"
Max looks down and goes back to the office.
"Billy left, may I sit here for a little bit sir?"
Mr. Coleman lets her as he leaves his office to walk around the school. Max starts balling her eyes out.
