Song: Whiskey and Rain by Michael Ray

✈︎

The crowded halls of Edenbrook Hospital filled Dr. Olive Sage Lopez with joy. Not because of all the sick people, but because she was a doctor. Someone who could help them. Two months after winning the trial that would end her career, and it still felt like a victory.

She enjoyed her job. She loved to help people. But most importantly, she loved her boss. As chessy and stereotypical as it seemed, she couldn't help but fall for him. His dark brown-black hair and his bright blue eyes painted him mysteriously, drawing the young noirnette to him.

She felt a soft vibration on her outer right thigh. She slipped her hand down into her coat pocket and pulled out her pager as she slipped through the crowded OR. She turned right towards the main level when she realizes that
she was paged by the Cheif of Medicine, Dr. Naveen Banerji. She smiled before turning around and heading to his office.

A few minutes later, Olive is standing outside his door. The cool struck her as her knuckles taped against the metal. Upon hearing permission, her hands slide down to the handle, pushing down and forward.

The door opens slightly, and Dr. Lopez steps into the small space. Dr. Banerji smiles softly at her before looking back down at the envelope in his tired hands.

"Dr.Banerji, you paged? Is something wrong?" Olive questioned as she quietly.closed the door behind her

Naveen said nothing, but motioned for her to take a seat. Olive did so uneasily. As she say down across from him, she could feel the sorrow washing over the air, coating it with grief.

Naveen and Olive said nothing. The Chief's attention seemed to be everywhere else. His eyes darting to his computer as he slightly push in and out of his office chair. His desk seemed to harden and computer seemed to not work.

"Olive..."

She was worried. The Cheif hadn't used her first name since his lake house, right before what seemed like his final hours.

"When was the last time you talked to Ethan?"

Olive gulped internally. Realizing that this was about him.

"Yesterday. On one of my cases."

"No, not Dr. Ramsey, Ethan."

Olive took a shaken breath, remembering back to that night after her trial. Her intern year was growing close to its end, and soon she would be a resident.

She looks down at the table as she remembers the night she had spent with him. His hands roaming her naked body as she filled the air with his name and scent. After that night, he completely shut her out. Seeming to desperately wanting to return to just mentor and mentee.

She coughs and looks back at the man in front of her.

"It's been a while..."

Naveen frowns as he places the envelope of her hands, squeezing them tightly.

"I'm so sorry Olive."

Before she could ask what he meant, he simply removed himself from his chair and headed towards his door. He turns back to look at her once more, his worried and sad gaze reminded her of a loving father. Olive's eyes meet his and she felt the wave wash over her. He breaks the stare and closes the door behind him.

Olive's hands shake slightly as she looks down at the letter. It was addressed to her. She ran her hand over her messy name. She knew exactly who this was from. She gulps as she neatly opens the envelope, running her fingers across the slight roughness of the paper.

As she pulls out the letter, she runs her hands across it; feeling the ink in her hand. A tear rolls down her cheek as she begins to read it.

Dear Olive Sage,

If your reading this, than that means that I'm gone. Not gone, gone, but not there. I've accepted an offer to help the sick in South America, the Amazon region of Brazil to be more precise.  I know this will come to a shock to you, but this is something I must do. It is for the best. For the both of us. We cannot continue on the path we started. The gamble of your future is to great.

Sincerely,
Ethan Johan Ramsey

A few weeks later

It's been a down pour, beating on a tin roof

The light sound of water droplets hitting the ground filled Olive's room. She say against her headboard; pilliows preventing her from sinking into the haesh wood. She brought her whiskey glass to her lips and sipped the warm liquid that filled her insides.

It's been Black Label pouring on ice

She sighed once more. 2 weeks. 14 days. 336 hours. 20160 minutes. That's long its been since Ethan Jonah Ramsey completely walked out of her life.

Made a honky-tonk outta this living room

She took another sip, letting the rain wash away her sorrows.

Yeah swimming through his goodbye

She let the tears roll down her face. Her cries muffled by the storm.

Misery loves company

Yeah whiskey and the rain, coming down, coming down

Splash of bourbon in a glass

Olive steadied herself. Taking a deep breath as she watched the rain. And thought about all the hours she had spent on him.

Yeah pouring something on the pain, let it drown, let it drown

The wasted minutes. The countless calls that went straight to voice mail. She sat there, empty. For the first time, in a long time, she had only one solution.

Try to wash away the past,

Since my blue sky sunshine, whole life

Hopped on that midnight train

Til' the bottle runs out

Or the clouds roll away

It's just Whiskey and Rain
