Kenzie woke up to a soft voice that she didn't recognize calling her name. She was alarmed when she opened her eyes and was greeted by a young woman with brunette hair and brown eyes that wasn't her mommy. The small girl sat up quickly, frantically looking around the room. Her eyes were met with pale purple walls with white stars. It wasn't home. Where was her mommy? Her breathing quickly became shallow and fast. Kenzie hummed, pressing her wrists to her temples hard.
"Hey... Mackenzie, I'm Dr.Lexie. You're at the hospital. Everything is okay," Dr.Lexie said calmly. Kenzie shook her head and started to cry. Kenzie began hitting her head with her fists. Dr.Lexie placed her hands on Kenzie's head, buffering her fists from making contact with her head.
"Mackenzie, I have someone for you." Kenzie didn't respond and dropped her arms at her side, sobbing.
Dr.Lexie placed Lolo on Kenzie's lap, "Here you go, sweetheart." Kenzie quickly wrapped her arms around the stuffed animal, bringing it close to her chest and breathing in the familiar scent. The small girl squeezed her eyes shut, rocked herself back and forth, and pretended she was home with her mommy.
"Come on, hun, we need to check your vitals," Dr.Lexie spoke softly. Kenzie didn't respond. Dr.Lexie sat the girl up and led her out of her bed, leading her down the corridor to where they were taking vitals by the nurse's station. Kenzie held onto Lolo tightly and chewed on her hand, crying. Dr.Lexie sat her down in the chair gently before turning to the nurse who was taking vitals.
"This is Mackenzie Lovato," she said, introducing Kenzie.
"Aww, Mackenzie... honey. Everything is going to be okay," the nurse said as she wrapped the blood pressure cuff around Kenzie's arm before putting the pulse oximeter on her. The nurse and doctor watched Kenzie's readings, noting that her pulse was racing and her blood pressure was pretty low. The nurse flipped to Kenzie's file to look at the results of her blood work since she was new. She was anemic and deficient in multiple areas. They needed to figure out why.
When the nurse was done with Kenzie, she went and hid between the game cabinet and the wall. Once everyone had their vitals read, it was time for breakfast. Kenzie squeezed her eyes shut and held on to Lolo, hoping that if she wished hard enough she would be invisible. All of the other kids had cleared the room to go to the dining hall and Kenzie thought she had actually managed to evade being seen when Dr.Lexie walked up to her.
"Mackenzie, come on, please. It's time for breakfast, hun," Dr.Lexie told Kenzie sweetly, outstretching her hand towards the small girl. Kenzie leaned away from her and whined, starting to hum to herself. Dr.Lexie cautiously took Kenzie's hand in her own and pulled her to her feet. Once Kenzie realized she was being led to the dining hall, she started to cry. Kenzie only just tolerated it when her mommy fed her.
"Poison. It's poison. They're trying to feed you poison," the voices started. Kenzie couldn't let them poison her. Before she knew it, she was being sat down at a table and bacon and pancakes were placed in front of her. Her breathing became fast and she pushed the food away as tears poured from her eyes. Dr.Lexie sat next to her and placed a comforting hand on her back. Kenzie screamed and sobbed, picking up the tray and throwing it over the table. Dr.Lexie was surprised by the small girl's actions.
"It's okay to be upset. It's not okay to throw your food, sweetie," Dr.Lexie spoke softly, getting up and cleaning up the food on the floor. Kenzie curled into a ball with Lolo and hyperventilated. Dr.Lexie quickly put the tray aside and made her way over to Kenzie.

Demi was on the couch with Lauren and Camila talking about Kenzie when her phone rang. It was the hospital. She quickly answered.
D: Hello?
H: Good morning, is this Demetria?
D: This is she.
H: Good, good. This is the hospital calling about Mackenzie Lovato.
D: Of course, is everything okay?
H: We actually have a concern we'd like to address with you.
D: Go ahead.
H: Every time we try to get her to eat or drink, she has severe panic attacks and we have to medicate her. Does she usually struggle with eating and drinking at home?
D: I do have a hard time getting her to eat and if she doesn't want it she won't eat it.
H: I see. Well we are at the point where we need to do an ng tube because according to her blood work, she is severely anemic and deficient in multiple areas. Not only that, but her blood sugar is dangerously low. She's also already underweight, so there's that issue as well.
D: I understand. If she does need one, please sedate her. I can't see her handling that very well.
H: Oh yes, she would be sedated.
D: Okay, well please give her one if she needs it.
H: I will have them put one in this morning after her vitals are taken. She will go over to the main hospital with a nurse from our ward for the procedure and return to us when she the procedure is finished.
D: Thank you for letting me know.
H: My pleasure, do you have any questions?
D:Do you know how long you will be keeping her for?
H: I couldn't tell you, but the average stay is about a week.
D: Okay thank you; that'll be all then. Have a good day. Tell my baby girl I love her.
H: You're welcome and I'll relay the message. You have a good day as well.

Demi couldn't help but to smile as she pulled up to the hospital. She was bringing her baby girl home this morning. They were discharging her because they determined she was no longer a danger to herself, they were able to diagnose her, and put her on medication. They had diagnosed Kenzie with Autism Spectrum Disorder having high support needs, Schizophrenia, PTSD, and ARFID. Demi was a little anxious about navigating Kenzie's new diagnoses, but she knew that with the help of the medication and her new therapist she would be able to help her.
Demi locked her car as she started towards the hospital. Before she knew it she was sitting in the waiting room waiting for Kenzie to be brought out. About 10 minutes passed before Kenzie was brought out burying her face in Lolo with a nurse rolling her belongings on a cart behind her. Demi approached Kenzie and bent down to her.
"Hey, baby girl," she spoke softly, moving the small girl's hair out of her face. Kenzie looked up, seeing her mommy for the first time in over a week and cried, clinging to her mommy's shirt and burying her face.
"Oh, sweetheart. I'm here. We're gonna go home now," Demi cooed.
"Mmmmm..." Kenzie mumbled into Demi's shirt.
"Yeah, back home with Camila and Lauren... and you get to see Mani and Ally and Dinah," Demi continued.
"I know she's happy to see you," the nurse said with a smile.
"Good," Demi said smiling as she picked up Kenzie and placed her on her hip, noticing that she had on what felt like a pull up or a diaper, but not asking questions and, for the first time, being saddened slightly by the sight of the ng tube on Kenzie's cheek.
"Where are you parked?" the nurse asked.
Demi pointed to her car, "Just over there." The nurse nodded and they walked out to Demi's car and unloaded the cart into the car.
"Thank you guys for everything," Demi said with a smile.
"Of course. I hope Mackenzie has an easier go at things," the nurse replied.
"Thank you." With that the nurse headed back inside and Demi turned to put Kenzie in her carseat. The girl only clung onto her mommy's shirt.
"Come on, baby... so we can go home?" Kenzie loosened her grip on Demi's shirt and the young woman placed her in her carseat, making sure she was buckled properly. Demi head up front and got in, turning the radio on and happily starting the drive to the pharmacy so she could stop by on her way home.
