The Present...

I grabbed the lighter and burned another picture. It was a picture of me, Matthew, and Chelsea during one of Matthew’s soccer games.

Matthew was wearing his soccer jersey, Chelsea was in her cheerleading uniform, and I was just wearing regular clothes. I couldn’t help but feel pissed to why I was between them.

'Yes, karma, I perfectly know what you're implying. I'm the Third Wheel. The human bridge that's not supposed to be at the middle of my two best friends who like each other. So just shut the fudge up cause I already know!'

Today, I am being extra dramatic. Who wouldn’t be in my situation!? I’m a heartbroken teenage girl who’s on her freakin’ period!

Yesterday, Chelsea told me that she and Matthew were going on a date. — A freakin’ real date!

And once again, I have to be that fake person with the fake smile and the masked feelings.

I know I should’ve seen this one coming. It took him long enough to finally have the guts to ask her out. It took him three freakin’ years anyway!

He should’ve asked her from the very first time he saw her during Freshman Year so that I wouldn’t have to spend Junior and Sophomore Year as the stupid best friend who thought that she had hope.

And now he finally asked her out on the most unexpected day at the middle of Senior Year. — Plus, it’s a week before my freakin’ birthday.

If this is his advanced birthday gift to me, it is probably the worst advanced gift I have ever recieved in my damn life!

“Honey, your friend’s here!” Mom called from downstairs.

It’s probably Chelsea. If it were Matthew, he would directly knock at my room. He always says he doesn’t want to bother my mom. He has this phobia regarding bothering grown-ups.

As much as I wanted to hate Matthew for messing with my feelings, I just can’t. I mean, he’s my best friend.

The same person who was my crying shoulder when I watched ‘Titanic’.

The same person who comforted me when mom and dad got a divorce.

The same person who never gave up on befriending me as stubborn as I was back then, being the anti-social girl who didn’t like vegetables or making new friends.

And besides, he doesn’t know how much he’s hurting me. My feelings for him aren’t his fault.

I hurriedly went downstairs, seeing Chelsea and my mother talking in the sofa.

“Oh, so you and Matthew are dating! How wonderful!” Mom exclaimed.

“Yes, Karen.” Chelsea said, smiling brightly. Before she could chat some more with my mom, she saw me. “— Oh hey, Diane. Ready to go to the mall?”

“The mall?”

“Yes, Diane, the mall. Where people go shopping and—”

“I know.” I cut-offed Chelsea’s sarcastic answer. “But you didn’t tell me we were going there...”
