Time. Time changes people, whether you are old or young. With wisdom or with none at all. No matter how hard you try to ward off time, it can catch up with you. Some quicker than others.  Sometimes you wished you had more time, but why? Only God knows when you have served your time. You can be old, or young, whenever he decides to bring you back, you had better hope everything you had to do is done. But that’s the problem if you die young.

“If I die young, bury me in satin, lay me down on a bed of roses, sink me in the river at dawn, send me away with the words of a love song.”

-If I die young. The Band Perry.

Chapter.1

The cold snowflake melted on my tongue as I looked up at the December winter night sky. All the snowflakes looked like white feathers floating innocently down from the dark blackness. I sigh, and my breath makes a white cloud in front of me. I glance behind me at all of the Christmas lights and decorations on the street- New York in December. Everybody is so happy, living in their worlds of Santa Claus and Baby Jesus. Christmas music floats on the air towards me and doesn’t even mildly lift my spirits. How can anyone be happy? Quietly I walk up the street. All the lights create a warm little world, making the snow have a twinkly golden glow. I glance at a house and its Christmas tree stands proudly in the window, while a bunch of little kids sneakily look at all of the presents they have been given, trying not to make any noise so their mom or dad don’t come and see what they are up to. I remember those days, shaking a gift and betting on what was inside. Half the time I was right, usually a new sweater from grandma, or a necklace from a cousin. I shake my head at the memories and continue walking. My boots make a crunching sound on the newly fallen snow, my foot prints leaving behind a trace of me actually being here. But all of those foot prints will be covered by the time I make it back home, as if I really wasn't.  Just as I round the corner I hear more music,

“Sleigh bells ring, are you listening? In the lane, snow is glistening.”

A group of people are singing to a family trying to share the Christmas cheer.  I smile at a little girl who looks like a giant marshmallow, waddling after her mother.  I guess it is still nice to know that some people think Christmas is more than just the presents you receive, but the memories that you make.  My phone vibrates and I take out my purple blackberry to see a text.

Mom: When are you going to be home? I really want to get your room finished!

I sigh and put the phone back in my pocket.  I should have just replied saying I was never going to be coming home, but before I know it there would be police out looking for me and then I would be grounded, definitely not worth it.

I continue walking up the street until I reach the corner where there is a cozy little coffee shop that’s been on this corner since forever, just looking at this place literally makes me feel like I’m thirteen years old again. I open the door and right away a warm blast of air hits me, along with the smells of peppermint, hot chocolate and coffee.

I glance around at the old records on the walls, and the jukebox in the corner. The little shop definitely decked its halls. Green and red lights everywhere, tinsel hanging from the ceiling and more Christmas music.  This place has stayed the same since I was in junior high. All of my friends and I would come here after a football game, talking about how amazing a touchdown was or how hot one of the football players were. We’d come here to gossip, talking about how ugly some girl looked in her new Gucci sweater, or created our own gossip to just start drama. We were bad, what can I say.

The way this place was laid out made you have the feeling that Elvis himself could walk through the door at any moment and start serenading you.  Definitely old school, but I loved the poodle skirt era. Grease is like the best movie out there.
