Aruka plucks leaves off the stocks of herbs, crumbling them into a pot. She dips the ladle into the pot and sniffs the liquid before nodding to herself, continuing to stir the pot.
Y/N startles awake and gasps.
She grunts in pain, placing her hand on the back of her head, flinching where she got hit.
Naru was next to slowly wake up with her head pounding in pain. She looks around and realizes they're back at home.
"Your brother carried you home." Aruka notified.
Y/N groans in pain and looks around before slowly sitting up, sweat rolling down her face.
"What about the lion?" She asked.
"Taabe went after it." Aruka answered, nodding her head out to the forest, and continued stirring.
Y/N nodded, and Naru rose up from her bed.
"I have to find him." She grunted.
"No, you need to rest." Aruka shook her head.
Aruka poured liquid into two small cups, setting them down by Y/N and Naru.
"Ihka. Drink this tea." Aruka required. Both of the women didn't grab the tea as they were told to, and Y/N rubs the back of her head in pain.
"Ihka." Aruka repeated to them.
Y/N stops and looks over before reaching to grab the two cups and hands one to Naru before they both take a sip.
Y/N sighs softly by the warm-flavored liquid.
"Puhi survived because of your guys' medicine." Aruka slightly smiled.
"There's something else out there. Taabe needs my help." Naru sits up.
"We saw it. I was about to kill the lion when Naru fell and was knocked unconscious, but something else out there roared in the distance, and I lost my chance to kill the lion." Y/N explained.
Aruka sighs and sits down, looking at her daughters.
"If your brother needed you, he wouldn't have brought you two back here." Aruka gives them a stern look.
Y/N furrows her brow, gazing down before lifting her eyes back up at Aruka to meet her gaze.
"You think the reason for kühtaamia is to prove you can hunt, but there's only one reason:" Aruka paused.
"To survive," She explained.
Chattering can be heard outside the tent, making Y/N and Naru look out.
"Taabe kima! Taabe kima!" The little girl announces, running out to the tribe peering into the darkness.
Taabe trudges to the campsite out of the darkness with the dead lion slung over his shoulder and holding the lions head.
His face is streaked with the lions blood.
The tribe mates gather around, and he drops the cat's body onto the ground, facing his tribe with exhaustion.
The Chief and his mother smile at him proudly.
Y/N helps up Naru, and they exit the tent, staring at Taabe. He did it.
Y/N felt happy and proud for him, but she knew Naru and she couldn't bring it home.
Her gaze changes with sorrow.
The bonfire bellows with Taabe standing beside the Chief. The Chief raises his hand as the tribe gathers around the fire.
Y/N and Naru watch him.
Taabe gazes, smiling at his tribe mates. The wind picks up, making the feathers that are attached to the Chief's carved staff rustle.
He passes the staff to Taabe, placing a hand on his shoulder.
Y/N frowns and lowers her gaze. Naru puts a comforting hand on her shoulder, glancing at her with sorrow.
The Chief starts ululating, and Taabe raises and shakes the staff overhead, shouting, all the tribes whooping and cheering.
Aruka smiles and claps, approaching her son. Taabe grins, and Aruka places a kiss on his face proudly.
Y/N looks on with a grim expression while she watches Taabe and his warriors holler in delight.
Y/N shook her head to herself and stalked off; Naru's expression furrowed, and she followed her.
"Naru! Y/N!" Taabe calls off to them with a smile, moving out of the crowd to catch up to his sisters.
"Where are you guys going? We did it." He proudly said.
Naru turns around. "No. We didn't do it." She steps closer to her brother.
"What do you think left those tracks and skinned that snake? And before I fell, I heard a roar in the distance." She explained.
"Naru." He sighed.
"I had the lion before I fell too; I saw lightning in the trees. There's something else out there." Y/N informed firmly.
"And if there is, I'll get it." Taabe pointed out.
"We need to go back out. Far, beyond the ridgeline." Y/N said.
"No." Taabe declined.
Y/N shook her head. "Okay. Well, I'll hunt alone if I have to." She turned around, but Taabe stopped her, grabbing her arm before letting go.
"You can't." He said sternly.
"Do I need your permission, War Chief?" She mocked.
Taabe sighs. "It's not about permission. You can't." He stammered and looked at her.
"I had to carry you back." He explained.
Y/N's eyes glint with tears. "I can hunt. We can."
Taabe's gaze softens, and he sighs, glancing at the ground. "You're right. We didn't do it. I did."
"You both tried it. You just..." He exhaled.
"You couldn't bring it home." He glared at her softly before walking off with the staff.
Y/N scowls and blinks away the tears, wiping her face before walking off back to the tent with Naru, her hand on her back, rubbing smooth circles.
"It's okay." Naru comforted. "Let's get some sleep."
Y/N nodded and entered the tent before lying down on her side, sighing, and drifting off to sleep.
