He waited for the caregiver to leave, then he crawled out of bed. The other orphans knew what he was doing, but they didn't care enough to tell on him. He had been doing it almost every night since he had arrived at the orphanage at the beginning of the summer. He had been an orphan ever since he was seven, but during the school year he got sent to boarding schools.
He crept over to the window and climbed outside. Behind the orphanage lay a dense forest. Most trees were a bit more spread out, just enough so that you could outstretch your arms and not hit any trees. He began to stroll down the path that he always took, deeper into the forest.
In the moonlight, his light blonde hair appeared almost white. It was quite long for a guy. But would have been considered short for a girl. He often compared it to that of a mop. As if someone had set their mop down right on top of his head. Despite it looking like a mop, he was still very fond of his hair. The thing he liked most about is that it was different. Most white boys had short brown hair, but not Sol.
He stood at five foot eleven, closing in on six foot. Which was quite tall for his age, he would be turning sixteen in a few months.
A light breeze drifted by, blowing his hair across his face. The stars twinkled up above. The moon shone bright. Being able to do this made him feel so alive. For once in his life, he was finally free from the orphanage, from the boarding schools, from the regrets. He could just be himself, without having to hide. He wasn't scared of the dark, or what may be hiding in it. The only thing he was scared of was trusting the wrong person.
Sol Dusk was definitely an interesting guy. The other kids at the orphanage thought he was weird. They knew that he snuck out every night, but whenever they asked him what he had been doing, it was obvious that he was lieing. And none of them tried to go with him because they were scared they would get caught. So the question still remained, what was he hiding?
Sol arrived at the usual spot. The tree stump with a few rocks on it that served as his tripod. It was a quite sad tripod, but it worked and that was all that mattered to Sol. Sure he had to sit in front of the stump for close up shots, but he wasn't complaining. It was better than his old setup in the janitors' closet that nobody used anymore back at the boarding school.
Sol remembered those old days when he would sneak into the janitors' closet and have to talk quietly so that no one would hear him. Which was the main reason why most of his old videos were so shitty, because you could barely even hear him.
Sol used the rocks to set up his phone and got into character. Pulling his hood over his head and letting his hair fall into his face. His hair covered the entirety of his face, turning him into a mysterious hooded figure by the name of Nox Duskmore. Remembering his lines that he had wrote into phone earlier, Sol pressed the record button.
He had been teaching himself how to be an actor ever since he was twelve. And for the past two years, he had been playing the role of the same character day after day. Even after all that time, he still hadn't perfected it. The easy part about playing Nox Duskmore was that you didn't have to do facial expressions. But every positive has a negative. Sol had to put extra emotion into his voice to make up for the facial expressions. That was the hardest part of playing Nox Duskmore, putting enough emotion into your voice.
As Sol said his lines in front of the camera, he channeled the emotions. Allowing them to flow into his voice and affect his overall tone. Sol was satisfied as he watched it back. It wasn't often that he took the first take, but this time it was spot on. He posted the video and began to walk back to the orphanage. Within just two minutes, the post had crossed a thousand likes.
Nox Duskmore was the next big thing. Everyone was obsessed with him. All the girls were simping over him and all the guys were growing their hair out to be just like him. But the most interesting thing about Nox Duskmore, was that nobody knew anything about him. He had never shown his face and he had never answered any questions.
He had even kept it a secret from those who he knew in real life. The other kids at the orphanage had no idea that a hooded figure in disguise was walking among them. Of course most of the orphans didn't have phones, but the ones who did always made sure to keep the others caught up on the latest Nox Duskmore post.
Sol had major trust issues, which was why he tried so hard to keep it a secret from everyone. He had already made the mistake of trusting the wrong person once before. If he made that mistake again, everything could fall apart. Which was why he considered it to be safer if nobody knew.
Sol arrived back at the orphanage, climbed back through the window and got into bed. Another night without getting caught. At this point, he was sure that he was going to make it to the next school year without getting caught. Especially since summer was coming to an end. Living at school was a big upgrade over the orphanage. So Sol was actually excited for the school year to start.
The only problem was that he was going to have to find a new place to film his videos. There was no way he was going back to the janitors' closet.
Sol was completely oblivious to the fact that his life was about to change drastically. Something was about to happen to him. Something that he had given up hope on many years ago. But Sol had been told long ago that every positive has a negative. This change could be the very thing that causes everything to fall apart.
