After another night of being haunted by his dreams, Sol was back in the kitchen of the orphanage. He was usually tasked to wash dishes because whenever he was serving food, he had trouble getting all of his hair into the hair net. Sol was washing the dishes after lunch with Niko Dalzen.
As much as Sol hated to admit it, Niko was his best friend. He didn't have many friends at the orphanage. There was maybe one or two groups who he was always welcome with and of course there was Niko, but he was and always would be a loner. The only reason why Niko stuck around is because he was clingy and didn't know the meaning of personal space.
As they washed dishes, Niko rambled on about his karate club. It wasn't a legit club. In reality it was just a few guys meeting up in the bathroom and attacking the air. The worst part about it was that they didn't have scheduled meetings, it was just whenever they wanted it to be. So Sol would walk in on them and decide to hold it until they were done.
"We learned how to Goku shut o oh chi yesterday!" Niko exclaimed.
Sol didn't know what language the karate terms were in, but he knew for a fact that Niko wasn't pronouncing it right. Niko was much shorter than Sol. He had messy black hair and had a few freckles on his face. He was the same age as Sol, despite looking younger. Sometimes Niko made Sol feel like he was Squidward trying to keep SpongeBob at bay.
They had known each other for almost three years. They had been lucky enough to get put in the same boarding schools and orphanages. They knew some other orphans who had to say goodbye to their friends because they got put in different boarding schools or orphanages. It was sad because most orphans didn't have a phone and didn't have a way to keep in touch.
Sol was one of the lucky few who didn't fall into that category, but it was a different story for Niko. They knew deep down that they would probably have to say goodbye to each other one of these days. But they tried not to think about that. As long as they were together, it was better to enjoy it while lasted rather than focusing on the future.
Niko had been demonstrating a karate move that he had clearly not learned correctly, when the alarm went off. It meant that a family was there to adopt. Sol couldn't have cared less about the family, he was more excited that he had an excuse to get off work. Nobody wanted to adopt a kid over the age of ten, so most orphans gave up hope by the time they reached their teen years. Niko on the other hand was determined, he still got excited every time a family came.
As they left the kitchen, Sol turned to go the other way.
"Sol, aren't you coming?"
Niko asked that every time a family came. It wasn't like he was going to get in trouble for not going. The orphanage was so big and it wasn't like they took roll or anything.
"Niko, there's no point. We're just gonna get passed." Sol hated to crush Niko's dreams, but it was the truth.
"Whatever man, I'm not gonna pass up the opportunity." Niko declared before walking off.
Sol watched as Niko walked off, swinging his arms more to the side instead of straight. He would always be a mystery to Sol. How did he still have all this hope and determination after all these years? And where did it come from?
Sol began to walk around the orphanage responding to dms. He ignored the ones asking him to show his face or any personal questions, but he tried to get around to all the others. Even with the younger kids gone, there was still many older kids walking around. Sol had to look up every five seconds to make sure he wasn't going to run into anyone.
He had almost made it back to the kitchen when a girl bumped into him. She whirled around, her dark hair flowing. She seemed to be about his age. She had long wavy black hair and she was clutching a stuffed unicorn to her chest. She also had a backpack on. It wasn't like the type of backpack you would wear to school, it was much smaller.
"S-sorry about that," She quickly apologized.
Sol noticed that she was shaking and clutching the unicorn really tightly.
"Are you okay?" Sol asked.
"Y-yes, I'm just, uh, a little scared." She stuttered.
Sol had never seen this girl before. He wasn't sure why she would be scared. And why was she clutching the unicorn so tightly?
Sol slipped his phone into his pocket. "Why are you scared."
"I, um, I've just never been in an orphanage before and I just lost my sister." She explained.
That was when Sol realized, she wasn't an orphan. She was with the family who came to adopt. As I mentioned before, Sol was a loner. He never tried to get caught up in anything, but seeing how scared she was, the least he could do was help.
