Squid sat on his cot, gazing pleasantly at Miss Ashley's face. She was lying down, her head on his lap, her fingers intertwined with his. They had been in there all afternoon. In fact, they had spent every afternoon in D-tent since Mr. Sir had allowed them to start dating a week ago, talking and kissing. The other boys had already gotten sick of it and resorted to spending the afternoons sitting outside or in the wreck room, and Squid didn't miss them one bit. He hardly noticed they were gone.

"What are you gonna do when you get out of here?" asked Miss Ashley.

Squid shrugged. "I haven't really thought about it."

"Are you gonna go back to school?"

"And repeat two whole grades?" he scoffed. "Nah. I'll probably just take the G.E.D. You could take it too, you know."

"What for? I've already got a job."

"You don't really wanna stay here forever, do you? I know you won't leave your dad, but if you got your G.E.D y'all could get jobs out in the real world, maybe rent your own apartment, or something."

She hesitated, then said, "It ain't that simple."

They were silent for a moment. He gently stroked her bottom lip with his thumb, thinking about kissing her again, but he could tell she was frustrated about something. She was no longer looking at him and her hand now felt loose in his, unlike before.

"I could get a job here," he said, "as a counselor."

She looked at him and laughed. "You don't wanna do that."

"Why not? If it's good enough for you, it's good enough for me."

She smiled at him, and he leaned down and kissed her. The rest of group D came in. A few of them grimaced at the sight of them making out.

"I'd cut that out, if I were you," said X-Ray.

They ignored him and continued to kiss, only stopping when they heard Mr. Sir's gruff voice as he entered the tent, saying, "Haven't y'all had enough of each other yet?"

Miss Ashley sat up and looked at him.

"Come on," he told her. "It's lights out in ten."

She gave Squid one last kiss on the cheek, then headed to tent F with her father. Squid went to brush his teeth and use the bathroom, then got into bed. He fell asleep within minutes. Sleep came much easier after spending hours with someone who made him feel as calm and happy as Miss Ashley did. He'd been digging faster lately too, trying to get back to see her sooner. The next day he managed to set a personal record, finishing his hole just forty-five minutes after Zero, the fastest digger in the camp.

Miss Ashley sat on the steps outside the office while he took a shower. Mr. Sir came out and traced where she was looking, then he covered her eyes. She giggled and

moved his hand out of the way. Squid quickly dried himself off and put on a clean jumpsuit, and Miss Ashley stood up, ready to go to the tent with him.

"Not so fast," said Mr. Sir. "We need to talk."

She looked at him, then Squid, then back at him, starting to get impatient. "What's up?" she asked.

Squid came over to see what the delay was.

"Look, I know I said it was alright, you two being together and all," said Mr. Sir, worrying them both, "but you've been slacking off for days. If you can't keep up with your chores, I'm gonna have to put a stop to this little relationship of yours."
